The Beauty Of Being Single

5 things to discover without being in a relationship.

From a societal standpoint, the word 'single' carries one of the most negative connotations. In the public's eye, being single is equivalent to being lonesome. Unfortunately, for them, they do not realize that being single is full of enlightenment and self-finding. While some people work really well with a significant other, it is important for those of us who are not engaged in a relationship to know the opportunities that come along with being single. These are five ways to find the beauty in being single.

1. Traveling

Being able to travel on a whim is a massive perk to being single. Different cultural experiences contribute to well-informed opinions. Someone who thrives on the desire to travel can form a strong sense of self and will not waver their opinions when challenged by a significant other (eventually). From singing along obnoxiously to songs on the radio to experiencing the alluring views on your stops, traveling is one of the most beautiful things to do while being single.

2. Self-sufficient

After being single for an extended period of time, one learns to fully depend on themselves. The only income you rely on is your own, time management is up to you, and all life choices are made by you. For some, the idea of being self-sufficient is a frightening one, but it is worth it in the long run. Independence will have you feeling like you own the world, and rightfully so. Being able to take care of yourself successfully or even with a bit of struggle is one of the best things a single man or woman can do.

3. Self-improvement

Having a lot of time to yourself will allow you to improve aspects of yourself that you may not favor. If you are seeking more time to volunteer, wanting to spend more time with your family, or trying to find exactly what your aspirations are, now is the time to do so. After your journey of self-improvement you will never look for validation of your existence from somebody else, not that you should ever have to anyway.

4. Observant

It turns out your seemingly endless role as the third wheel has paid off after all. On your single endeavors, you will learn how to be more observant, more by default than by choice. One can determine a healthy relationship from an unhealthy one by observing small gestures and social cues. This can help you build better friendships with people and, eventually, successful relationships.

5. Lazy days

If this is not the greatest perk of being single, I do not know what is. The endless amount of novels to read, the hundreds of series on Netflix, and the thought of wearing pajamas all day are more than enough reasons to keep me inside for a whole day (or several,. Whoops). I think of lazy days as a way to destress and clear your mind. With all of that traveling, we might as well have a day to relax every now and then.

With all of the pressure that revolves around being in a relationship, why not kick back and relax, blare Beyoncé’s “Single Ladies,” and love yourself because there is so much beauty in being single?

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
