I can’t decide.
For as long as I can remember, this phrase has held a special place in my daily vocabulary. All my life I’ve struggled with making decisions and sticking with them, and after seeing many self-help books called “How To Decide” (I have still not chosen which one to read first) and talking to many friends, I realized this decision-dilemma plagues more people than I originally thought. Yet, as aggravating as indecisiveness is, I have come to discover the silver lining of possessing a capricious nature. So, for all of you who are trying to decide whether to continue reading this or not, I hope I can shed some light on a unique quality we possess. I hope to show you the beauty of being fickle.
Oftentimes, indecision comes not from choosing which option to pick, but which ones not to pick because every option holds such great potential. After writing out multiple "Pros and Cons" lists and asking advice from all of your friends, you come out of a difficult decision knowing exactly what you want and why — until you change your mind a second later. Perhaps it’s just that those who take a long time to decide have this difficulty because they can see the good in every option. Despite taking what seems to be an eternity to get anywhere with your choice, it all stems from an optimistic outlook that makes every choice seem appealing in its own special way.
Fickleness leads to spontaneity. Some of my greatest adventures have come from last-minute decisions — whether it was hopping on the next train to New York City for the day or running to buy a lottery ticket five minutes before the winning numbers were drawn. Every day holds something new, and I’ve realized the best medicine for an indecisive mind is just seeing where it takes you that moment. This, in turn, allows for easy adaptability in any given situation since you never quite know where the wind will take you.
Finally, we should all be extremely grateful for never being able to decide anything. Having to make a decision in the first place implies having abundant possibilities and opportunities in front of us. Whether we are deciding between ice cream flavors or future careers, the fact that we have a choice to make shows just all of the amazing prospects we are offered. The beauty of being fickle is the realization of just how truly blessed you are.
