Never escape the tide.

If You Live By The Beach, You'll Understand

For as long as I can remember, spending time at the beach has been a huge part of my life, no matter what temperature it is or was outside. Whether with family, friends, or friends that have turned into family, it's safe to say that all of my best memories involve the beach in one way or another.

Growing up on Long Island, and spending every summer of my life on Fire Island, I have been lucky enough to live a life ocean side. If you're lucky like me, these next seven statements are easy to relate to.

1. No sound is more magical than the waves hitting the shore.

Appreciating life has always come much more naturally with some sand in your hair and saltwater on your skin, while listening to the waves crashing around you. It's music to your ears.

2. You appreciate the power of the ocean: it can destroy everything.

Your troubles seem small in comparison to the forceful and endless ocean. Ocean tides teach us that we cannot avoid change. Living by the ocean has made me more flexible. Just the way that surfers do, I have been taught to enjoy the ride.

3. When people say that they don't like the beach, you judge them.

Not because you want to be a judgmental person, but because you simply cannot understand how someone doesn't like the smell of the salty air. Que Justin Bieber:

4. Your camera roll consists of mainly sunset pictures.

Who passes up on the opportunity to show off your favorite beach spot to all of your followers, to prove that your beach is better than theirs? Really though, we do it the 'gram.

5. You would wear a bathing suit year round if it was acceptable.

Since it's not, you mask your seasonal depression by splurging online. Victoria's Secret, Triangl and Billabong are your most frequently visited websites during the months of the cold winter (and the summer too).

6. Nothing compares to beach cruises with your best friends.

There's something special about listening to your favorite song of that week on replay, as you drive over the bridge with the windows down (up in the winter), as your hair blows in the wind, all in good company. Shout out to the Robert Moses Causeway, I miss you.

7. You wouldn't be the person that you are if you lived anywhere else.

No matter where I go in the world, the ocean will always be home.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
