It's that time of year: the cold weather has finally hit, the scarves and boots are coming out of storage closets, and the number of negative comments regarding the "basic white girl" are rapidly hitting Social Media.
According to this BuzzFeed Article, Autumn basic white girl activities can range anywhere from coordinating Halloween costumes, wearing flannels, throwing piles of leaves in the air for the purpose of taking a kick-ass Instagram picture, and take pictures of your riding boots whilst standing on a pile of colorful leaves. The list is endless, and I have done approximately 90% of the things on that list.
I'm not ashamed of all of the "basic white girl" activities I have participated in, mainly because I think the whole concept is completely ridiculous. Yes, it's true that an overwhelming number of girls do similar things when the temperature and leaves start to fall every year. But that's not because we love to do these things because everyone else is doing them (at least, not all of the time).
Flannel shirts are comfortable, posting pictures on Instagram is really fun, scarves are warm as heck, and the Fall/Winter drink lines at Starbucks are delicious. Also, have you ever put on a pair of leggings? They're complete game changers. Seriously.
The point is that nobody should never have to defend their choices - especially not because of some dumb stereotype. People should be able to do what they want without worrying about having a huge label pasted on their forehead. People should also be able to do what they want without having to worry about being slammed for it on Social Media.
It's true that of all the problems plaguing our world, the attacks on basic white girls is not of utmost importance. However, I think it says a lot about someone when they refuse to let other people do whatever makes them comfortable and happy. Constantly categorizing and judging people for what they decide to do with their time is not a healthy mentality to have.
