No, not thank you, as if I received something from you, but thank you, as you decided to deny me something. Denying someone an opportunity can be one of the best motivations in life. The art of saying thank you for denying one the chance to be the best can propel one to become their greatest.
The month of March is on us, and I would like to take this time to highlight the progress of women. We must reflect on some of the issues women encountered in the past, from limiting Black women to lower class, devaluing jobs, to denying millions of other women their simple right to vote. Some of these issues may seem long in the past, but this is far from true.
Around the world today, women are still being “suppressed” from their liberty, freedom, and justice. It was only less than a hundred years ago women were allowed to vote in the United States, while today, in the 21st century, there are still countries where women are not allowed to participate in this simple act. Although great strides were made, it is still evident that there are more strides to be taken. The fight is still alive for all women, and especially for a woman of color.
Small accomplishments combine to become great ones. One of the most recent accomplishments in the great strides to equality of women is women being allowed to serve in any job in the armed services. This sets the stage for many other great achievements to come, such as a woman president of the United States of America.
The task of providing equal opportunities is not that of only women, but the men around the world too. It is something one must do for the generations to come. It is something we owe to those who have come before us.
Happy Women's History Month.
