Before reading this article, I would like to acknowledge that both sunflowers and roses are my favorite flowers. They are both beautiful and radiant in their ways, however, I relate more to the luminescent sunflower. For some, sunflowers are seen as youth-like or a symbol of one's childhood. On the other, roses are symbols of love. Roses bring a sense of passion and maturity. Yet, there are several reasons why it is okay to be a sunflower in a world full of roses.

Growing up, I was always a little different than those around me. It was hard for me to share my thoughts openly, thus I began to conform to the opinions of those around me. This concept was fitting until my late high school years. There were several ideas and concepts that I did not agree with entirely, thus sending me into a sort of emotional exile. However, as I entered college, I began to realize that there is nothing wrong with being the odd individual out. Hence, the feeling of being a sunflower in a garden full of roses.

Much like a sunflower, there are several underlying strengths that I possess that others did not know about. Sunflowers are known for being a sign of optimism and good luck. Yet, not many people know that sunflowers are a symbol of longevity. Thus, the bright and dazzling flower is known for its ability to endure through hard times. Many of us go through trials and tribulations daily. Whether it be difficulties of passing Organic Chemistry 2 or the constant criticisms of those who "only want the best for you." By finding your inner sunflower, you will be able to muster up the strength to endure any trial that comes your way.

Not only is the sunflower known for long life, but the sunflower is also a symbol of loyalty. Loyalty is an action rather than an actual feeling. Yet, it can be interpreted in several ways. Some people show loyalty by simply being there when others need a shoulder to cry on. However, if you're somewhat of an awkward being like myself who lacks in the area of emotional connection, this might be difficult. I'm here to tell you that there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. So while you may not be the best with words or the most affectionate being in the room, your presence alone when a loved one is going through a difficult time will always be more than enough.

While roses are lovely and mysterious, much like the many exotic beings that some compare themselves to regularly, always remember that it is very much okay to be a sunflower. You might not be the most intelligent, pretty, or amusing individual in the room, but you will always have value. Often, these values will be underlying and it will be to belittle them because of the events that take place around you, However, never forget that you are equally appreciated and majestic from an internal and external perspective.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
