Everyone knows "The Office" is one of the best shows to ever air. But even a die-hard fan like myself (I'm not exaggerating when I say that I've seen the show at least fourteen times through) can admit that season nine isn't that great.
Except for the fact that during season 9, the best episode in its eight-year run aired during season 9.
On May 9, 2013, the world was blessed with an episode entitled "The A.A.R.M." And as Oscar Martinez says at the end of the episode, "Nothing will ever be the same."
Here are my reasons why "The A.A.R.M" is the is the best episode of "The Office."
1. Dwight is finally the Regional Manager.
Dwight spent the entire series trying to become the regional manager for Dunder Mifflin, Scranton. The episode takes place six days into his reign as manager. And while there are some ridiculous things going on in the background (a new security system and propaganda-looking posters of Dwight hanging in the conference room), the office seems to be running smoothly. Possibly because of the assistant to the regional manager?
2. Jim is Dwight's assistant.
I always felt bad for Dwight, who spent so many seasons asserting that he was the "Assistant Regional Manager," only to have Michael or others correct him with "Assistant to the Regional Manager." Now, Jim (who Dwight acknowledges as his former enemy) is helping Dwight enforce a no nonsense office.
3. But nonsense still exists.
After a season of Jim and Pam being on the rocks, Jim is back in Scranton and back to his pranking ways. The prank in this episode? Have Dwight declare himself as his own Assistant to the Assistant to the Regional Manager (A.A.R.M., if you will). The tasks of the A.A.R.M. challenge are ridiculous (a hot coffee obstacle course), but by 2 o'clock, Dwight declared that there was only one possible assistant to his assistant. Himself.
4. Jim and Pam.
I'd like to take a moment of silence for the greatest TV couple of all time.
In this episode, Pam feels guilty for making Jim quit his job with the sports marketing upstart he was working on. Jim doesn't seem to mind, but Pam is concerned that she isn't enough for Jim. Jim responds by having the documentary crew make Pam a video of their memories together, and then gives her letter he wrote to her before they were dating.
It's beautiful.
5. Dwight and Angela.
Angela has to bring her son Phillip to work because he got kicked out of daycare. Dwight has a suspicion that Phillip is a Schrute and spends the day trying to figure it out. A chat with Jim makes him realize that it doesn't matter if Phillip is his son or not (spoiler alert: he is), so he does what anyone would do: pulls Angela over and professes his love to her via megaphone.
6. Toby is in two scenes.
Completely unrelated to the plot of the episode, but - Toby is only in two scenes and he has no speaking roles. Like Michael, I hate Toby for absolutely no reason whatsoever, so the fact that he's nonexistent is a blessing.
There are other reasons why "The A.A.R.M." reigns supreme, but these are the most important.
