Both Memorial Day and the 4th of July have come and gone. You spent many of your summer days looking forward to these two holidays, planning pool parties, beach trips and getaways with your closest friends. But now you find yourself in the beginning of July with no other holidays and free days off from work to look forward too until you’re back on campus.
If you’re anything like me, you're wondering what exciting things will be in store for the rest of the summer? You have a month and a half left of freedom from schoolwork and you want to make the most of it. And you should.
Because summer only comes around once a year and before we know it (hopefully not THAT soon for most of us) we will be working (hopefully for a company we actually like) but with a limited number of vacation days and trust me no one wants that yet.
So where am I going with all of this? On January first, most people make a list of things they hope to do that year. Sometimes, in the beginning of the summer people make a similar list. So… go out and actually do the things on your list!
Summer is the only time of our college years where (for most of us at least) once you leave the office of our laborious internships...that’s it. There's no homework or studying to take home with you. The time is yours and you should do whatever the heck you please!
Take an adventure! Even if it's just trying a new little coffee shop 4 towns over. Those are the places that will actually surprise you the most and hey- you may even make a few friends. If you’re a little more adventurous and have some time on your hands- try a new beach or something! You may surprise yourself at how much fun you have.
Start a Blog- Nowadays people start blogs about anything...literally. Anything. So if you have a cool internship, travelled to an interesting place or just want to share your feelings with the world. There are so many websites that make it easy to start. So start- and let the world know just how cool and unique you are.
Read a Book- SHOCK! I know you’re shocked at the idea that people actually read books but whether you read it in print or from the screen of your kindle, tablet or phone reading something new will open your mind (and maybe your heart). New perspectives make you more worldly and everyone wants that, trust me.
Plan your next year (or semester)- While I think everyone should be living in the moment, I know how it is to be a perpetual planner (like myself) and want to start planning all the exciting events of the upcoming year right now (holla at my girls as we plan for spring break!). So do it! There is no shame in being excited and you definitely will get the best deals when you book early $$$
Most importantly (and it should go without saying but I’ll remind you anyway) HAVE FUN - this is cheesy but it’s true. We are all so preoccupied with our 9-5 jobs, internships, studying for classes and studying for GREs and GMATs (why are we studying in the summer?!!) that we forget we are still young! See your friends before you all depart for another exciting year at school. Call up your friends who just graduated before they move a few hours away. Do something crazy and spend time with a sibling! These are the people who will be here for years to come and they’ll appreciate even the smallest amount of time spent with them.
This last month and a half of summer doesn’t have to be filled with frantic packing, all work and no enjoyment. We are still young and need to act like it! Once the workday ends take some time and try something new. Seize the day (or night) people! I can pretty much guarantee you won’t regret it.
