From a young tender age I was a lover of music and a lover of mixing songs together. Through this time, I have learned a thing or two on how to make a playlist that will set your most personal moods. It takes time and effort to make something that you will truly enjoy and will keep you throughout your day. Whether you're doing homework, going out, working out or just sitting and chilling with friends, it's important to keep an ideal playlist in the back of your pocket. These are some tips on how to turn that playlist you've got from a skip-able mess to a playlist for success.
1. Catchy name
Now this step can be done anytime throughout the making of your playlist. I have always been the type that came up with a name after all of the songs are put into the playlist, but it all depends on the person. You want this name to be catchy and catch your eye because this is your piece of individual art that you're creating. Playlists are meant to be unique nuggets because no playlist is the same as another.
I always find that simple, single-worded titles work. "Chill," "Soft," "Cool," these all evoke an emotion yet keep it interesting. I am also guilty of picking titles that just sound odd yet catchy. "Capture," "Light," "Electric;" words that stick out like a sore thumb. The spicier the title the more likely you will go back to it.
2. Theme or no theme?
The biggest debate with a playlist that you could make on iTunes, Spotify, or any other music sharing publication is whether you want the songs to all be a part of a theme. Spotify is great with that because all a person has to do is go to the "Browse" button and all of these playlists come up with certain genres, moods, etc. Sometimes, however, it feels a little discouraging when the playlist is not something you put your own personal touch on.
I have done theme playlists and non-theme ones. A "love songs" theme is nice when wanting to feel sweet with a certain someone. Or what about an exercise theme while you are pumping iron, being Hulk Hogan in the gym? How about a party mix that will leave you and your friends raving until the end of time? It all depends on the occasion and personal preference. Non-theme is great too when you are feeling certain songs from many different genres, which brings me to the next point ...
3. Mix up the genres
A cool way to mix things up is making playlists that show off various genres. This is one of my personal favorites because you have no barriers or anything stopping you from putting that '60s Simon & Garfunkel song right up next to today's Beyonce. Yeah, it may seem a little jumbled and random, but that's the point of playlists — mixing up a bunch of songs together in any order you want.
I also love to put today's pop music right up next to '70s disco just because what the hell? It's my playlist and it's music that I'm feeling in the moment. Never let anyone tell you how random one genre of songs can be from another. Mix that Bruce Springsteen song next to the Spice Girls and then to Lorde.
4. Be able to pick songs you won't skip
This one is by far the hardest to do. Sometimes you might not be feeling a certain song that day or you're looking for one song in particular, so this is inevitable, but try at every cost to pick songs that you can play straight through. The main reason we are putting these songs together is to play them and though skipping happens, try to stick with certain songs that you will want to listen to in that playlist.
You will thank me later when your phone is dripping wet after you decided to turn that Katy Perry song in the shower and then your speakers are done for.
5. Keep an open mind
With this playlist that you are cultivating and growing, try your best to pick songs that you not necessarily know. This can really break up songs that you may have known since kindergarten to a song that you have barely heard before. I found some of my favorite artists just by putting them on my playlists and not knowing anything about them. The one indie pop song with the sepia cover would look great in your chill, relax playlist. Put those artists whose names you can barely pronounce in because you never know they could become your favorite artist of all time.
Keep an open mind on music in general because one cannot judge a whole genre without listening to a little bit of it first. I am guilty of this. Country has been the bane of my existence for a long time until I began to discover artists in the country world who were not half bad. You don't have to love all of it, but you can certainly love some of it.
6. Be true to you and have fun
This is your playlist. Your playlist. You have a lot more to offer than you think and you could be the one to show one of your friends their new favorite song that they didn't even know about. The whole point of playlists is to listen to music that you want to listen to. Playlists, however, bring everyone together to make a unit of music lovers. That Daft Punk song will keep you and your friends dancing together forever, all thanks to the joy of playlists.
