If you don’t know, I’m an Instagram addict. I check it in the morning like news. It’s a virtual news reel of things going on in people’s lives, whether it's people you know, or celebrities, or food that makes your mouth water. I can almost guarantee you that in 21st century America, our generation uses social media as a news platform before the typical news stations on the TV. Whether it is through Insta, Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat and the like, these social media apps have virtually replaced traditional news sources these days.
Regardless, we all know that picking an Instagram caption for our picture is the toughest part -- even harder than picking out the actual picture itself. After all, people will see if your caption game is strong or weak (what has our world come to?). There are five stages to picking that Insta caption, and I've listed them below.
- Look for possible screenshots you took that have the perfect quote or phrase to capture your emotion in the photo you chose.
-Whether that means you take some sort of witty quote from your fave book, or a song lyric, generally speaking, it will have absolutely nothing to do with the photo (I'm sooo guilty of this!). Also, if someone says your caption game is weak you may edit it, ooo I don't know about this one...
2. Ponder life and wonder whether this was even the best selfie out of the 312 that you took.
-I can tell you from personal experience that I usually take a whole photo shoot worth of selfies and maybe if I'm lucky I'll get one I like. And yes, there are definitely times when I've been caught selfie-ing. I've taken selfies in bathrooms in front of mirrors, in a parking lot, waiting at a doctor's office. The list is virtually endless. I can guarantee you that many, many people take selfies in various locations. I have no shame. Whoops!
3. Think about how the quote mentioning sunshine, rainbows and unicorns has nothing to do with a “candid” of you and your BFF laughing on the beach. (I’m guilty of using unrelated song lyrics or inspirational quotes as captions all of the time -- whoops!)
-Honestly, who cares if the caption has nothing to do with the beach photo you captured. If it makes you happy, go for it (as long as you're not hurting anyone else in the process).
4. Decide if the caption is too short or too long.
-I usually write a book as a caption for someone's birthday or when I do a memorial post for the passing of my grandma. After all, it seems with the new Instagram update people try to make captions shorter so you can see it without hitting "show more."
5. You decide you don’t like any caption choices, so you settle with an emoji.
-I'm an emoji addict. I love emojis as captions for photos. I think it's cute. However, since I have a Android (aka Galaxy), no emojis for me....sad I know! Last time I tried downloading emojis it corrupted my phone...so yeah, none for me. But, when someone posts them I still see them (usually), they just come up in black and white! Ugh, boring I know!
Well, there’s that. How do you pick an Instagram caption?
