The countdown to Thanksgiving beings on November 1st, when we switch over from ghoulish fun to Operation Turkey. We start to see our breath in the air, hear the faintest Christmas music off in the distance and start dreaming about all the delicious Thanksgiving dishes that are just a few weeks out of reach. And then BAM, it's here and you're overwhelmed with excitement and emotions.
Here are the 14 stages we all go through on Thanksgiving day:
1. Blissful Ignorance
The moment you wake up and smell the coffee wafting into your room from the kitchen and the day feels just like any other day.
2. Confusion
You look over at the clock and realize its 8 a.m. and you can't figure out why you're up so early.
3. Terror
You wander unknowingly into the kitchen to make yourself some breakfast and are met with flying spatulas, 20 people clustered around the stovetop, and your mother shouting at anyone who will listen.
4. Obedience
You grab whatever your mom or dad hands you and you start cooking.
5. Hunger
Deep, all-consuming, all-encompassing hunger. You never got to eat breakfast and all you can smell is food and all you want to do is eat.
6. Anxiety
Because someone forgot to pre-heat the oven or salt the turkey or pick up the pies and now Thanksgiving is going to be a disaster.
7. Relief
The turkey is in the oven, most of the side dishes are made. Your mom has had her first glass of wine and everything has relaxed a little bit.
8. Anticipation
You can smell the turkey, the mashed potatoes, the caramelizing onions and pies and you just. Want. To. Eat.
9. Remorse
10. Excitement
It is here. The most delicious meal you have eaten in months. And even though we make this meal for kind of messed up reasons, it's the only time your mom makes five of your six favorite dishes all in one night. So you are excited.
11. Discomfort
Someone brought up God, the election, or Obama. Thanks, Uncle Adam.
12. Absolute Joy
There are four different pies in front of you and you can have a slice of all of them.
13. Pain
Because you had two slices of all of them.
14. Excitement
Leftovers.
