The 10 Friends You Have in College

1. Roommates

You live with them, so naturally you are close and do a lot of basic life things together. Your family away from your real family.

2. Going Out Friends

This is your squad, the group that people see you in and the group you take the cheesy Thursday night balcony and white-wall pictures with. You have the best stories to go with this group of crazy fun ladies.

3. Bestie from Home

You FaceTime her every chance you get and sometimes you’re even closer with her now that you are apart because you’re making that extra effort to talk. This is the friend at home most likely to visit you in college.

4. Distant Friend from Home

This one you grew up with and can basically go the whole school year without talking, but your closeness and friendship never changes.

5. Mama

Yep, your mom becomes your very best friend when you go to college. You talk everyday, share way more with her, miss her lots and talk to her way more than when you even live with her. Every time she comes to visit is a treat and the most exciting part of your month.

6. Favorite Frat Friend

This is the girl you can call up no matter what point you are at in your night and she will drop everything she is doing to go to that fraternity you are both in love with (or let’s face it, she is probably already there).

7. Sorority Event Bestie

The girl you can call who is always going to dinner or that sisterhood event your roommates will not go to with you. She will also be your biggest supporter when it comes time for you to run for a position in the winter.

8. Major Buddies

Same classes, same goals, same career path. You study with them and you always have them to gush to over your incredible summer internship.

9. Work Friends

The people you vent to about rude customers and unreasonable bosses and coworkers. No one understands you quite like them or goes through the same hard work and struggles you do with a job whether it be from home this summer or an internship you spend your free time during the school year doing.

10. The Stand-in Mom/Family

This is the girl from your hometown, but she also came to college with you. She is your tiny piece of home, your rock. She keeps you grounded, while also letting you grow into your true self instead of the person you pretended to be in high school and growing up.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
