We used to say it with sarcasm in our voices, “Thanks, Obama.”
Now, we are completely genuine when we say, “Thanks, Obama.”
Whether you agree with his decisions as president or not, there is no denying the impact Barack Obama has made on the United States of America during his eight years in office. His presidency has had its ups and downs, and he has had his fair share of opponents. Despite this, I truly believe that President Obama has been able to make America a better place. So, thank you Mr. Obama, for everything you have accomplished during your presidency.
He broke a racial barrier.
This one is obvious, but prior to 2008, a black man in the White House was unheard of. Obama’s presidency has given people of all races hope. He has proved to young people of color that they truly have the potential to do anything (even become the President of the United States). I realize that relations between different races is still a major issue in the United States, however, the conversation about race has been sparked and we are making strides to address this issue.
He listened.
President Obama has been criticized like no other, just like most presidents are. However, through the ups and downs of his presidency, President Obama remained poised and respectable. He might not have agreed with others’ opinions or cruel words, but he listened. Listening is a vital quality of respectable people. Confrontation and debate, although necessary at times, is not the key to success. Listening allows for opinions to be heard and reciprocated.
He implemented the Affordable Care Act.
The Affordable Care Act is one of President Obama’s most prominent contributions to the United States. Although it has its flaws (as most plans do), the plan is an important step towards bringing health care coverage to all Americans. More Americans have health insurance than ever before. The BBC stated that in 2015, the number of uninsured Americans was 9.1 percent, a record low. This plan also allows people with pre-existing medical conditions to receive coverage and allows young adults to stay on their parents’ health insurance plan until they are 26 years old. Obamacare has truly made an impact on the lives of many people, specifically low-income Americans.
He improved the economy.
President Obama inherited an economic crisis, back in 2008, and he was able to handle the situation extremely well. According to NPR, the unemployment rate is now half of what it was eight years ago. Of course, the economy is not perfect but it is definitely better than it was eight years ago.
He brought our troops home.
The United States armed forces successfully captured Osama bin Laden with Obama as their Commander in Chief. Within his two terms in office, the number of troops deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan had decreased to around 15 thousand people. The country has since improved their relationship with Cuba and kept Iran from developing a nuclear weapon.
Although these are only a few highlights, President Obama has accomplished has accomplished this and so much more as the 44th president of the United States of America. Therefore, I am completely sincere when I say, “Thanks, Obama.”
