Now I wouldn't consider myself a "super feminist" by any means, but I wouldn't consider myself not a feminist either, so proceed with caution as you consider this 500 Words On.
Hear me out now, I don't think being called "pretty" is the worst thing in the world, it makes me feel special, appreciated, and can definitely cause and spike in confidence. But I've gotten tired of it. I just think girls were made to be so much more than pretty and that should not be the adjective we all strive for. There are much higher virtues in this world, girls, so don't settle for the guy who just calls you pretty. Go for the man who sees past your looks, past the image you project to the world, go for someone who lets himself peer into your soul.
You are so much more than your looks, however attractive you may be. In this day and age, as a young woman, you can be anything. You see, the world is changing now, women are more empowered than they have ever been, so let that inspire you to be more than just a pretty face.Strive to be successful, witty, talented, strong. Strive to turn heads with your confidence and grace, not just how bangin' you look in that skirt. Strive to be the best in whatever you are passionate about, not just to have the best hair in the room. Don't just seek the end all be all of intensely cliche compliments: "You're pretty". There are many variations of this of course, "You're prettier than her" or "Your new haircut makes you look pretty" or "Damn you look pretty tonight" etc, etc. However, by unpopular opinion, I obviously disagree with this being a renown compliment, because there are so many perspectives on what this word even means. The most attractive looks to someone might be unimpressive to someone else. So be pretty in your own way, for yourself. Do your eyebrows (or don't) however you like them, not what instagram considers "on fleek". If you hate the way make up feels, don't wear any. If you like to wear the same dirty birkenstocks everyday, wear the heck out of them (even if your mom calls you a hippy). But if curling your hair before class everyday and never repeating an outfit is your thing, you go girl.
The thing is you can't be "pretty" to everyone all of the time. As you may have heard, "You can be the ripest, juiciest peach in the world, and there's still going to be somebody who hates peaches" (Dita Von Teese). So screw "pretty," be you.
