A Thank You To My Guy Best Friend

To my brother from another mother.

For all those times I needed a friend and my girl friends just didn’t quite get it, or maybe they did but I wanted another opinion; there he was (and is) ready to let me know my worth while also making sure to keep my head out of the clouds. There’s no one quite as honest as your guy best friend and for that, I owe mine a big part of who I am because without him, I’m quite sure I’d still be thinking that the world is full of rainbows and butterflies and that every person I meet always has my best interest at heart.

You’re probably going to read this thinking how much you want to gag over the sappiness but there are a million and one times I could thank you for. More importantly, there are a few things I can’t let slip from our memory as the time passes of how just grateful I am that you exist.

Thank You for Being You

There are numerous qualities you have that make me admire the shit out of you, simply just for being YOU. Your sense of humor is one that can make someone cry (literally because sometimes you have zero chill) or laugh until they pee their pants. Your intelligence is quite astonishing and your compassion (although you don't always show it) for others is admirable; no wonder my mother seems to think you’re one of her own.

Thank You for Being There

Whether it was being locked out of my house every other weekend night in high school because I would forget my house key or for taking me under your wing when I became a newbie to the West Coast. You were always there. Maybe not happily ready to drive around the corner to pick me up and sacrifice your bed, to sleep on the other couch so I wouldn’t be alone or to leave campus to meet me at the train station from the airport just to take the bus back to your frat house, but you did it anyways and for that you are priceless to me.

Thank You for Keeping It Real

Its no secret that you have one of the most sardonic personalities I have ever known but it’s made me toughen up as a young woman. We’ve gotten to the point where you’re not afraid to tell me when I’m being annoying, or if I look like a "scrub", or if something I said or did was completely unnecessary. Whatever it is, I know I can count on you to tell me the brutal, honest truth so know that I admire your sincerity. Know that I also appreciate all the times you’ve let me know when to pull myself together and not let myself be taken for granted by anyone.

So, I know you’re not huge on affection but I am and you know me better than I might know myself sometimes and there is nothing better than having a friend that’s like family. You have basically become my brother and I couldn’t be more grateful that my family will always happily welcome you into our lives.

I await the day you find a woman who loves you unconditionally and can only hope she knows just how lucky she is to have you because to me you are and always will be everything and then some.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
