Thank You To My Friend From Another Country

Distance means so little when someone means so much!

Thank You To My Friend From Another Country
Art Wolfe

Dear Friend,

Although we are from two completely different sides of the world, we have connected in so many ways. Despite cultural and social differences, we have formed a bond that is stronger than distance and language. Thank you for taking your time to be a friend to me!

Thank you for being patient with me. In my many failed attempts to learn your language and asking countless questions about your country-thank you for your patience as you explain your way of life, one that I am so eager to learn about. Thank you for repeating words and phrases slowly and so many times so that I may be able to ask for simple things.

Thank you for sharing your culture with me! From the food that you have cooked for me to the day trips around your country, I am eternally grateful for your eagerness to share your culture with me. Thank you for working so hard to immerse me with all the beauties and riches that your country has to offer.

Thank you for caring for me. Being sick in a hospital in a foreign country is a frightening experience! Thank you for visiting me and sitting with me for hours in the hospital, playing Rummy with me to pass the time. Thank you for finding me a bandaid when I got terrible blisters from walking those cobblestone streets. Because of your kindness and compassion, I was able to feel at ease thousands of miles away from home.

Thank you for being willing to learn about my culture. Thank you for taking an interest in my home country as well! I am just as excited to share my traditions from Louisiana with you as you are to share the traditions from your country with me. Comparing our roots, we discovered that we were more similar than we ever thought possible.

Thank you for making me laugh. Being far away from home can be a stressful thing, however, it did not seem to be when I was able to spend time with your gracious family! Thank you for the many family movie nights your family shared with me. I'll never forget those nights your mom talked about her favorite singer and belted out his songs, which made us laugh until our stomachs hurt.

Thank you for loving me. Thank you for showing me that love has no bounds! Whether we are sharing a bedroom together for months or a million miles away, I am always able to feel the effects of you and your family's love. Agreeing to host a foreign exchange student from another country was not an easy decision, however, the love that you shared with my family and I was inspiring- so much so that when the day you finally had to leave us and go back home, we all cried because we did not want you to go!

Thank you, thank you, thank you; for all of the life lessons you have taught me, for accepting me and my family, for trusting us to travel far away from home in order to live with complete strangers, and most of all thank you for being a life long friend!

Parks and Recreation excitedly gathered around a laptop at a table in an office setting.

The library. Club lib. The place every college student goes when they want to try and be a productive member of society. Who better to explain your experience than Parks and Rec?

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
