A Thank You to My First Friend

I couldn't be more thankful for a friend like you.

A Thank You to My First Friend
Marina Lombardi

Where do I even begin? For most, the very first friend you meet on the first day of kindergarten is simply someone to run around with on the playground or simply to talk to until you gravitate toward new faces. For me, my very first friend became my best friend within a matter of days and is still my best friend today. It's typical for most friends to say, “we share so many memories,” but in this friendship that is a complete understatement…

Together we have been through it all, literally. From countless birthday celebrations, to new pop artists, to learning the “it” dance moves and creating unplanned movies, we have experienced all the new waves together. We are the pair of friends with the most embarrassing photos starting from flip-phones, to iPad selfies, to making it a point to use all the effects on photo booth in one sitting. From collecting Webkins, to Tamagotchi’s, to battling in Guitar Hero whenever school was cancelled, and our favorite, Digital Blue, we’ve managed to create some of the most hilarious, unforgettable memories.

Aside from the materialistic waves, thank you for always being the friend that’s been there for me through it all. From making new friends, to losing loved ones, to the crushes and butterflies, to absolute heartbreak. We’ve yet to have a single argument to this day, not many pairs can attest to that. You’ve been the friend to give me nothing but honest, unbiased advice, instead of just telling me something I want to hear. You've always had my back, and whenever I’m down I can always count on you to be there for me (even on speaker phone in my back pocket). We even have traveled together, not many friends can say they’ve traveled to California and Florida back to back years in elementary school. We were such rebels we even missed the first day of second grade because we were still soaking up the sun.

We’ve experienced life together every step of the way and I couldn’t be more thankful for the friendship we share. You mean the world to me, and I don’t know what I would do without you. Sometimes I look back and think to myself, "is it truly possible to share so many memories with just one person?" Mostly all my childhood memories, jokes, and laughs were created with you by my side. We’ve said for years, “we are friends forever, I know it,” and it couldn’t be a more truer statement, you already have a spot in my future wedding. You know you're friends forever when you still sign each others birthday cards with the outrageously long list of nicknames you've complied throughout the years. I am also extremely grateful that we have shared the same taste and appreciation for music, photography, movies, and quotes. Those things are completely essential for a successful friendship, and we both know it.

You know me better than anyone else and we always pick up exactly where we left off. Thank you for always being the friend to push me to reach for the stars, and to be nobody but myself. Never forget that you're beautiful inside and out and that I have never met someone as dedicated, sweet, and honest like you. You're amazing and I am so glad throughout the years we've stuck together like peanut butter and jelly. Having a true friend like you has truly been a blessing, and I can't wait to create more amazing memories with you forever. Love you lots and thank you for being you.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
