A Thank You Note To My College Roomie

No matter how much we talk and how much I say I miss you, I feel as though I never say thank you enough. Some people are “gifted” with some horrible college roommates. Those who don’t respect personal space. Those who eat the other’s food. Those who are truly just the worst. You, my dear, are one of the best gifts I have ever received.

Thank you for respecting my space, both emotionally and physically. You understood when I needed to be left alone or truly needed a shoulder to cry on. You helped me through some of the worst times of my life and was the only reason I got out of bed some days (even if it was to feed me horrible Nest food). You never touched my things or borrowed anything without asking and for that I am so grateful.

Thank you for not eating my food. While this doesn’t seem like it should be a big deal, it is. When you have been dreaming about that fruit snack or nacho lunchable or microwave pizza all day to come back to find it gone, it’s heartbreaking. You never stole my food and offered me yours on more than one occasion.

Thank you for answering the phone. As one of my closest friends, I am so grateful that you will respond to me at one in the morning on a Tuesday. You have never hesitated to pick up when I’m having boy or school or work or family or anything-related crisis. I could always count on you to pick up when I locked my keys in my room, and I still can when life is crazy.

Thank you for being my first friend. College is hard and meeting people is hard. We were put in the same room together and you did not have to befriend me, but you did. You welcomed me with open arms from the moment we found out we were living in Scott 104 and have not looked back since.

Thank you for loving animals, especially mine. I never hesitate to contact my vet-in-training whenever I have a question about my sweet kitty, and I love how much you love her. Having her in our room Spring semester was such a blessing to me and your willingness to have her there is amazing.

Thank you for loving all the same stuff as me (except A Christmas Story). But living with someone who likes the same shows and the same music and the same movies has been a blessing. Hearing you laugh at How I Met Your Mother or watching Easy A as I walked in after a long day always brought a smile to my face.

Thank you for believing in me. You have supported me, and on a regular basis, remind me to stay true to who I am. You are always there for me, even when I make poor decisions and I’ll love you forever for that.

Thank you for loving me and still wanting me around. I know I can be a handful and a walking disaster 99 percent of the time, but you love me no less. Could you only imagine how much closer we’d be if we had dumped our boyfriends before freshman year and lived together again this year?

I am so grateful for you and every fun and silly thing about you. Here’s to the future roomie, because I know you’ll always be there.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
