We thank a lot of people throughout our lives, sometimes without even taking notice. We say thank you to strangers who open doors for us, we say thank you to our family for always being there when we need them, we say thank you to our friends for supporting us and never failing to make us laugh. This is a thank you letter.
My dearest grandma,
I will never be able to thank you enough for all of the tears you wiped, all of the bumps and scrapes that you kissed, and for how much you spoiled me. Growing up with only mom, you were always the one I was with while she worked, and I don't think I'll ever find the right words to tell you how much I love you for taking care of me all that time.
You gave me more than I could have ever imagined whether it be love or food. I'll never forget our days spent watering flowers, putting up Christmas decorations while listening to Grandpa's old cassette tapes, or the Fridays we spent every week doing the same thing that we always did. The order of our Friday stops was always, first to the bank, the beauty shop after that, Pamida next, and then McDonald's for our lunch, but even through all that, we still somehow managed to make it back home before noon, but we both know it was before "The Price is Right" came on TV. I'll never forget how every other day but Friday went, especially in the summertime. I was always at your house early in the morning, and even though sometimes it was barely light out yet, you were always up and at 'em watching the news and drinking your coffee, or already outside tending to your flowers, or hanging clothes on the clothesline. My childhood was always full of cartoons, love, and snacks when I was with you and for you, I am grateful.
From you, I learned to be patient. I learned to love with all my heart. I learned to play go fish and rummy. I learned that it's okay to eat a fruit roll-up with every meal if that's what you want. I learned that having bubblegum at all times of the day is also okay. But most of all, I learned how much you loved me and that someone can make an infinite number of memories when they're loved and having fun.
The times I've shared with you are memories that I will never in a million years be able to replace or forget with anything. You are someone who carved their place into my heart and will never be replaced. Now that you're living with us, I never have to wonder what you're up to and I don't have to call you to ask how you're doing. I'm so proud to be your granddaughter.
"Two old bums, good old chums, my old grandma and me."
I love you, grandma.
Love, me.
