A Thank You Letter To My Freshman Year Friends

Thanks for keeping me from talking to myself.

A Thank You Letter To My Freshman Year Friends
Caroline Wambura

From those of you I met during orientation, to those who were my rocks during finals week, I want to say, thank you for your part in my amazing year.

To those assigned to my orientation group, and though we may not have become BFFs once classes began, you were and are an important part of my first year at college. Thank you for proving to me that making friends wouldn't be too bad, and thank you for always being a smiling face to run into around campus.

To those in my hall, thank you for always letting me in your door, whether it be locked or unlocked. Thank you for sharing your food and your gossip with me, and for giving me someone to annoy when my roommate was away. I appreciated you more than I ever mentioned.

To the rest of you, thank you for putting up with my incessant whining. That's a big one because I know I did it a lot, and I know that you just rolled your eyes and took it with a grain of salt. Thanks for not bailing on me after one too many "bad" grade meltdowns.

Thank you for studying, or more often, "studying" with me. Sometimes we had to check every room in what seemed like every building on campus, but eventually we got there. I never would've been able to stay until three in the morning if you hadn't been there to motivate me and keep me from walking back to my room alone.

And thank you for the study breaks. For the times when I thought I should lock myself away and write a paper but you convinced me to have *gasp* fun instead. I am especially thankful for those times because they were always a million times better than whatever project I didn't need to do that particular night anyway.

Thank you for making my Snapchat story look cool. No matter what we were doing, at least one of you probably ended up in my Snapchat story so I could prove to all my friends back home that I was capable of doing "college." And, of course, most of the cool things we were doing were never my idea, so I have to thank you for the actual cool things, too.

Thank you for keeping me sane when I questioned my major, or my purpose in life, or if I could deal with the presence of certain others for any longer (there were many, many times I thought someone might have to be thrown off a balcony, so thank you for stopping me and keeping me out of prison).

Thank you for late-night food and good music on a slow night.

Thank you for going to the school-sponsored events with me that I wouldn't go to by myself.

Thank you for all the meals we shared and all the laughter that always ensued.

Thank you for booing other sports teams with me and for always texting back "YES" to whatever free T-shirt scenario I dragged you to.

Thank you for sharing with me. Our beautiful school, your snacks, your room, your textbook, your study guides, your friends, your social calendar, your car, your money, your stories, your memories and your hearts were among many things I couldn't have survived the semester without. I am forever grateful for all that you have shared with me.

Thank you for being my home away from home, and I can't wait to see y'all soon.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
