An Open Letter to my Freshman Year Roommate

Freshman year, for most of us, is a completely new and unexplainable experience. You move away from home, share a bedroom, use a communal shower and miss home. Having the right roommate can make all the difference during this emotional roller coaster that we call college. Sometimes, along the way, we become too busy to thank those who did the most for us. So this is for all of you who owe your freshman year roommate a "better late than never" thank you.

1. First and foremost, thank you for agreeing to live with me freshman year.

I know I'm not always the easiest person to deal with, but we made it!

2. Thank you letting choose my side of the room, furthest from the door.

Just in case someone came to kidnap us, I felt you'd be better at protecting us.

3. Thank you for letting me hang an obnoxious amount of posters, including one that said, “Keep Calm and Eat Cupcakes.”

Why did you let me hang this?! We don't even like cupcakes!

4. Thank you for never letting me miss a night out.

Even when I would've rather stayed in my bed watching Netflix, I appreciate you convincing me to go out. There was never a dull night when I had you by my side.

5. Thank you for never letting me curl my hair myself.

We both know that curling hair was never one of my specialties, so thank you for never letting me put my hair in jeopardy. Even though sometimes we both looked like poodles, it was always a learning experience.

6. Thank you for always being my date to the dining hall.

Even though the food sucked, I still had you.

7. Thank you for never judging when I made poor choices.

Even though we both made some questionable decisions, they make for the best stories to this day.

8. Thank you for endless hours of pillow talk, even when you would’ve much rather been asleep

9. Thank you for enjoying selfies half as much as I do.

I could always count on you for a solid selfie—or maybe, like, one hundred. Either way, you never turned down a selfie or Snapchat, so thank you.

10. Thank you for watching Honeybooboo with me.

Yeah, this was a pretty weird show, but it was entertaining as hell. Thanks for finding it as funny as I did.

11. Thank for the cutest little notes you left me.

These were the best things to read before heading home for the weekend. I still have half of them tucked away in a box somewhere.

12. Thank you for letting me eat Easy Mac at 3 a.m. without judgment.

Thank god you didn't judge me because there were a lot of Friday nights with Easy Mac involved.

13. Thank you for popping the champagne when I was too scared to blow an eye out.

I'll never forget the time we went into the communal showers because we literally thought the bottle would explode.

14. Thank you for not killing me when my side of the room looked like a tornado went through it.

I know you're typically neat and organized, so thanks for not strangling me when my room looked like it should have been featured on TLC's Hoarders: Buried Alive.

15. Thank you for getting me out of bad situations.

We know I locked myself out a few too many times, or had too many drinks to get back alive.

16. Thank you for being my day one partner in crime.

You're the definition of my day one partner in crime. Thanks for spending your first syllabus week roaming the senior townhouses with me and drinking endless vatt and jungle juice. EW.

17. Thank you for allowing me to spend some of the best years of my life with you by my side.

We got to grow up together. We are still the reckless freshman at heart, but we've come a long way.

18. Thank you for agreeing to live with me a second time.

Even after seeing me at my lows, you still agreed to live with me again.

19. Thank you for always being on the same page as me, and understanding me like no one else ever has.

20. Lastly, thank you for being the best friend and roommate I could have ever asked for.

And still being in my life four years later, with hopefully many more to come.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
