A Thank You Letter To My High School Best Friends

Friends forever--right?

A Thank You Letter To My High School Best Friends
Casandra Maher

Hey guys,

Even though it’s only been about a year since we last stormed the hallways and the classrooms together, I miss you. I know we all still talk and I couldn’t be more grateful, however it’s different now. We’re all informing each other of our college friends and with countdowns until our breaks so that we can see each other. While everything has changed, it really hasn’t. During high school we grew together within 4 walls, now we still grow together, the only difference is some of us are hundreds of miles apart. You all know that will never change my gratitude or love towards you guys, but as time goes on I realized that I haven't thanked you enough.

1. Thank You for Growing With Me

Remember that year we were so obsessed with bronzer and blue eyeliner? Or the time I waxed half my eyebrow off because I didn't know what I was doing? Sadly, I remember it too. However, thank you for being there for that and not making fun of me then. Instead we get to laugh about now. While we were 14, we cared about a lot of other seemingly unimportant things in comparison to what we concern ourselves with now. Thank you for being there for the awkward stages and growing with me regardless.

2. Thank You for Making Me Laugh

Through those rough breakups or those family issues, the only thing you guys concerned yourselves with was making me laugh (or wheeze, ha ha.) From leaving class and joking around in the halls or the trouble we'd be up to in class, I'll always look back on with fond memories. Thank you for sharing some hilarious moments with me and creating inside jokes that we’ll all share when we’re in each other’s’ bridal parties.

3. Thank You for Being There

For the times that laughter wasn’t the answer, thank you for being there and just listening. I know I wasn’t always the bundle of excitement that I am now. So, thank you for being an ear as well as a shoulder to lean on when I needed it. No matter what time of day I still know I can always count on you guys which is something that is hard to find.

3. Thank You for Encouraging Me to be Myself

All teenagers have some horrible senses of self-esteem, however I don’t- because of you guys. You’ve always complimented me and told me all the amazing things about myself. While we all love to ‘roast’ each other, we know it’s just out of love. I don’t think I’ve gone a day without being complimented by each and every one of you guys. With a group as encouraging and loving as ours, how could I not feel great about myself? Thank you for always lifting me up.

4. Thank You for Giving Me Another Set of Parents and Another Home

The days of sleeping over each other’s houses and hanging out gave me a chance to get to see your family. At first it was just good to have insight on your pestering sister, your hysterical dad or the dog I hear about all the time. However, these sights and environments became my other homes because of the long hours I’d spend there. Years later, I know the driveway just like my own (and I park in them just as much), as well as I have other sets of parents sending me care packages and cheering me on while I’m off doing my own thing. But we all know that whenever a break comes I’ll be right back at your house like we never left it.

5. Thank You for the Best Senior Year I Could Have Asked For

Senior year was filled with after school or even late night drives to Taco Bell or to get wings, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. While this year was filled with a lot of lasts, we enjoyed a lot of firsts too. We all got our first cars and with that our independence, which meant I was showing up at your house twice as often as I did previously. I feel like this year was filled with insane amounts of bonding, almost as if to make up for the time away we’re experiencing now. Thank you for always giving me something to look forward to each and every day of high school, up until the last second.

6. Thank You for Keeping the Group Chat Alive

It seems that since we left each other, our lives have become a little less interesting. But thank you for keeping me and everyone else updated on your job, your family, your grades and so on, I really love hearing it. I like hearing that we can all survive without one another, but knowing that we all want to keep each other involved with our ‘new’ lives. Thank you for always keeping me up to date since I can't be with you.

7. Thank You for Continuing to Cheer Me On

From that time I chopped off more than half my hair or even the time I joined the bowling team, thank you for being my cheerleaders. Like I mentioned you guys are the best support group I could ask for and we all know how indecisive I can be. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for standing with every decision I make and being proud of me (even if you wouldn’t have made that choice.)

8. Thank You for Being Friends for Life

You have all seen me at my worst and my best, and are still here to say you did. Hopefully you’ve seen as bad as it can get, so the rest of our journey together should be a walk in the park. We have all been through so much together and I’m so grateful for each and every moment. Thank you for showing me how great friend-love is and what great people are, because I really didn’t have that in my life until I met you guys.

As you know me, I could go on with this for just about forever. So, I’ll stop here even though I have a lot more to thank you all for. I’m eternally grateful for each and every moment and memory I’ve shared with you all. I can’t wait for all of the moments we’ll share together in the future. But until then, I love you guys and I can’t wait to see you all soon.

Love always,

One of Your High School Best Friends

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
