Dear Disney,
As a child, everyone watched Disney and everyone had their favorite movies, whether it be any of the princess movies or the classics like The Lion King. But, most recently, many are starting to blame Disney for unrealistic ideas of what love is supposed to be like or that your prince charming is right around the corner. However, not all movies have the theme of love. Disney as a whole has a lot of different lessons to take away from that really make you think about life differently.
When you were little, you never thought about the hidden messages of the movies or just how dark the movies can really be. You just enjoyed the singing, the dancing, the beautiful princess and the talking animals. Then you grew up and realized, "Wow, Disney can at time be kind of dark and sad, but also there is so much to be taken away."
For example, in The Lion King, bad things happened, but it taught us that you have to be careful with who you trust and why. We also were introduced to Rafiki, a wise monkey that explained that you have to move on form the past. And let's not forget the ever lasting quote "Hakuna Matata, it means no worries". The Lion King is just one example of many. In Lilo ANd Stitch, we learned that "OHONA" means family, or the song "A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes" taught us that it is not always about finding your prince charming.
In Mulan, she sacrificed everything she had to help her father, regardless if she had no business fighting a war as a woman at that time. There was also The Jungle Book and Tarzan, that taught us that family is not about the people who look like you, but the people who love and care for you and are willing to do absolutely anything for you.
Disney should be a part of a child's life because there are so many lessons to be learned. Not only do we learn, we are allowed to relate to characters that we love and remember.
Thank you, Disney. You have shown me that I should keep dreaming and shooting for the stars. You have shown me that adventure is out there. You have shown me that family should come first no matter what obstacles may stand in the way. You have shown me that friendship can come in the most unexpected places and true friends will stand by you until the end.
Thank you for showing me all the different meanings of love, because it is not just between the person you are meant to spend your life with; you can love your friends and family just as much. My childhood would not be the same if I did not experience the beauty behind Disney classics, and I could not be more grateful for all the lessons I have learned.
From,
A True Disney Fan
