From Saturday, September 12 onwards, a section of Texas State University's Bobcat Stadium will now be designated for the deaf, including those that specialize and are fluent in American Sign Language.
Brian Guendling, a junior at Texas State University and one of the university's former football players, is the student to thank for this decision.
“I feel like hearing people look over the deaf community a lot,” Guendling said. “And we’re all human beings. They’re no different than anybody else, so I just want to provide equal opportunity for everybody to enjoy the football games.”
Though Guendling is not deaf himself, he's become an advocate for the community. In fact, you might recognize him from when he hosted a concert in American Sign Language to the hit song "Uptown Funk" by Bruno Mars.
As confirmed by the university, there are 32 deaf and hard-of-hearing students currently attending Texas State. But Guendling hopes to draw deaf people from all over the state, just as he did with his viral concert video.
The change to the stadium has only brought forth positive feedback from students, especially those in the deaf community.
“We’re not different than anybody else, we just can’t hear!” Karlie Frank said, who is among deaf student population at Texas State. “I’ve never heard of a deaf section at a university, and I hope it spreads for the deaf community to be involved too, it’s awesome.”
Those that qualify for the section will also get a discount; $10 instead of the usual $25.
