Texas Construction University

13

By MadonnaIt’s 6:55AM on a cold Monday morning in March. As you are attempting to enjoy the last sweet hours of your slumber, you are suddenly jolted awake by an excessive beeping. You search around your bed for the first suspect for the noise: your phone. You don’t want to deal with the wrath of your roused roommate, so you know you have to act quickly in your half-asleep movements. Why is your alarm going off so early today? You find the familiar rectangular hand piece and click the home button, to only be blinded by the light of your newly awakened phone. Your squinting eyes disappoint you, because you find out the phone is innocent. It is blank. What else could that noise be? Your eyes, now adjusted to the darkness of the small room, dart to the other side hoping to see your roommate’s phone lit up on her bed. Nothing. Where is the continuous beeping coming from? You then remember: You attend TCU, also known as Texas Construction University, where the third new upperclassmen residence hall is being built on the other side of your thin wall. You remember construction starts every day at approximately 7AM, including today. You try to turn over and go back to sleep, but the deed is done: you are up for the day.

“The construction begins very early in the morning, waking students up at the crack of dawn. It also makes it difficult during the day to work on homework with the loud beeping and noises that are constantly going on,” says Katie Davis, a resident of the Chi Omega sorority house.
This is not a unique experience. While Greek students’ home is under construction, they have had to learn to be flexible under the difficult circumstances. TCU Greek students who live in Worth Hills all know the struggles that have come along as construction has continued: time spent walking to classes has been elongated, effort put into studying has increased, and perfect nights of sleep have become extinct. The stress level in the Greek is definitely up and rising due to the unwarranted noise.
In addition to the noise, students have had to deal with many other construction-based consequences, including inconsistent or lack of water pressure and insects taken from the ground and introduced into the houses.
It is an understatement to say Worth Hills has gone through some physical changes over the past few months. First came the addition of Marion-Clark Hall. Now, they are currently in the process of finishing the third dorm and continuing work on the new multi-purpose center. With all of the changes in process, construction noise is inevitable. And the Greek community is surely aware of it. The site’s gates swing open every morning at 6:45AM, and the crew makes its way on the grounds to start a day full of hard work. They are permitted to turn on their large machinery at 7:00AM and are at it for the rest of the day until they pack up their bags and head home in the evening.
“The construction is never ending! It seems to always start early and end late,” says Natalie Hamachek, a resident of the Pi Beta Phi sorority house.
The end result of these construction projects is sure to be spectacular. However, before we can reap the benefits of our new home, we must all make it through the building process. Hopefully, the future horn frogs that will reside in the new Worth Hills will be grateful for our disturbed sleeping patterns, because they will show the sacrifice the previous residents made for a brighter tomorrow.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

An open letter to the good-hearted people.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
