If you haven’t heard, there has been another series of attacks by ISIS. On March 22, the capital of Belgium, Brussels, was bombed leaving at least 30 people dead and over 200 wounded.
The attacks started at 8 a.m. in the Brussels Airport. The first blast took place outside the security checkpoint. Shortly after, the second blast occurred near the airline check in counters. About an hour following the airport explosions another attack was reported at the metro station, located in the center of the city.
These attacks in Belgium have not been the first attacks by ISIS. In the past year ISIS has attacked in cities around the world including Mosque, Turkey, Egypt, Paris, California, and now Brussels.
People around the world view these attacks as dangerous, scary, and are living in fear of when ISIS is going to attack next and where. Don’t get me wrong, terrorist attacks in general are absolutely terrifying, but we should not let them define us. We should not live by fearing what could or could not happen in the future.
Every single day we face danger without even realizing it. Whether it be driving behind a reckless driver or running on uneven pavement, there is danger around every corner. Yet we don’t go about our days in fear of getting in a car accident or breaking an ankle. If we did we would miss out on opportunities that life throws at us.
If I let the fear of these terrorist attacks stop me from studying abroad, then I would be doing exactly what ISIS wants. They want to instill fear in is, they want to ignite panic and worry around the world. I’m not going to miss out on an opportunity of a lifetime by living in fear, and neither should you.
Take the life you are given and make the most out of it. Go overseas and visit the beautiful country that you have always wanted to see, but were too afraid to go to. Go talk to that boy that you've been crushing on for the longest time. Heck, go skydiving or bungee jumping if you want to get real crazy. We only have one life, so why not do everything you possibly can with it.
Life is about seizing each and every moment that is given to us. We should enjoy the life that we have by not fearing life itself. We only have one life, so don’t live in fear, just live.
