Tense Times In Cleveland
GOP

In case you didn't know, the Republican National Convention is starting this week here in the city of Cleveland. I myself am spending my summer here for an internship that I was able to get, and I could not have come to Cleveland at a more interesting time in its history.

First the Cavaliers winning the NBA Championship and finally bringing a trophy home where a parade with 1 million people in attendance was awaiting them. Now, the spotlight shines even brighter as one of the biggest political events of the year is coming to town, especially with who will be there. Donald Trump. I think it is safe to say that this election has been one of the most entertaining and heated elections we have seen in a while, thanks in part to numerous fights and protests between Pro-Trump and Anti-Trump voters.

The biggest question that is on everyone's minds though is "What is going to happen in Cleveland?" There is a tense situation brewing here with news around the country of discriminatory killings of African-Americans by police officers and terrorist attacks (such as the one in Orlando) are being mixed together along with the spices of the already heated political race to form a concoction of volatility. This is forcing many within the government and police sectors to prepare much, much more.

While spending my time here in Cleveland, I am living in one of the dorms at Case Western Reserve University. Being the summer, the area around has usually been fairly quiet, except for the handful of students here for a class or an internship as well. Much of that has changed thanks to the convention. Just down the hill of where I am staying there are multiple squad cars as well as military trucks parked to be used by the hundreds of security personnel for the convention. Some of the dorms are even being used as housing for the personnel. From local police to national guard to even police from D.C. known as "Capitol Police" it is clear to say that no one is messing around with making sure this is safe. You can even see military helicopters zooming around downtown as well. Speaking of downtown, anything close to where the event will be held (Quicken Loans Arena) is being shut down for the week such as the HQ of the company that I am interning at. Barricades are in the streets, fences have been put up and scores of police monitor the area. As comforting as it is, it is also a stark reminder on how we have to worry about a possible tragedy from occurring thanks to what has already happened.

I know it goes without saying but if you do find yourself in downtown Cleveland this week, whether to attend the speeches or protest them, please do so safely and smartly.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
