Things that you know are true when you are ten years older than you siblings
So when you are around ten years old you find out that your mom is pregnant again or they are adopting and you are both surprised and also thrilled because you have been asking for a baby sibling for the last ten years. This was partly because you wanted to be a big sibling, but also partly because you did not want to be at the bottom of the food train in the family anymore. (Though in hindsight, being the baby of the family had so many perks, but you wouldn’t trade your younger sibling for anything).
Here are some things you know to be true if you are ten years older than your younger sibling:
1. You will protect them, sometimes even from themselves.
There will be days that as they get older you will give them advice when they have bullies knocking on their door, and they will know that you will protect them. Sometimes they will bully themselves, you will fight for them on that too. You never want anything to hurt them ever and you would rather be hurt them even see them in pain2. You will be mistaken for their mom when they are little…and it will always creep you out.

You’ll hold them at the grocery store and people will give you judgmental looks. It might take you a few times of wondering why they are looking at you so harshly….then you'll get it and either find it funny or super offensive.
3. You will feel like a parent, but without any of the power.
You’ll find yourself trying to ground them for being a brat, but you’ll realize that you do not have the power to do so. They will know that too and tell you.
4. They will look to up you, whether you like it or not.
Whether you like it or not, you are their example and you are a rockstar to them. You’ll be in college when they are in elementary school and you will facetime or skype and get all sorts of letters from them saying they miss you. You will cherish those moments forever.5. Your friends will think of them as their little siblings at times.
They’re around them so much that they get protective of them too. Your sibling might even write them cards instead of you. That happened to me once.
6. They will not have the same rules you did.
You will find they are allowed to do things that you were never allowed to do…that’s okay. You were the trial run so now the kid can have more fun than you did.7. They will drive you insane, but at the end of the day they are your person and you cannot imagine life without them.
They are your person and you are theirs. Forever and ever AMEN.
