If you’re reading this, you have completed the fall semester and are now enjoying the blissful few weeks until the new semester begins. The break may seem like the perfect time to catch up on much needed sleep and Netflix binging, but if you’re anything like me, you might find yourself bored after a week of being home. So here are 10 great ways to spend your time without letting your brain turn to mush.
1. Read a book.
Take a trip to the local library, bookstore or your personal bookshelf. While reading might seem like a chore since you do so much of it for class, it won’t seem like work when you pick up a new favorite.
2. Get crafty.
Whether it be painting or knitting a handmade scarf, making something by hand is both relaxing and rewarding. Use it as a late Christmas gift or keep it for yourself!
3. Work on a puzzle.
There are plenty of jigsaw puzzles in stores this time of year and you’re sure to find one with a fascinating picture. Not into jigsaw puzzles? Pick up a book of Sudoku or word puzzles to exercise that brain.
4. Bake a tasty treat.
You can make your favorite holiday treat or find a fun new recipe to make. Your friends and family are sure to appreciate both the smell and taste of yummy baked goods. Added bonus: the person who does the work gets first dibs at licking the spoon.
5. Clean out your closet.
This may seem like extra work, but you’ll be glad to have it done. There are sure to be a few pieces of old clothing or toys that you’ve completely forgotten about. Put them to good use by donating them to a local thrift store.
6. Practice another language.
Learning a second language at school? The first couple weeks of the semester can be rough if you haven’t practiced. Spend a little time brushing up on your skills and impress your professor when you’re extra prepared on the first day of class.
7. Write.
Whether it be in the form of a journal, short story or poem, writing is a great way to relax and organize your thoughts.
8. Be active.
Go outside! Take a walk around your neighborhood or play with your dog. If there's snow, then go sledding or build a snowman. If you really can’t stand the weather, play an active game like Twister or browse Pinterest for some simple work outs. A little physical activity is sure to help you feel more energized.
9. Babysit.
Short on cash? Call some family members with little ones or ask around the neighborhood. It doesn’t have to be a full-time nanny job, but watching kids a few times can give you a jump start on your spending money for the new semester.
10. Organize your planner.
Unless you really, really love organization like me, then you probably have no interest in your planner right now. But if you write down important dates like days out of class and formals, then you won’t be caught unprepared when making plans later on.
If you find yourself bored this winter break, remember there are plenty of fun things to do without leaving your neighborhood or house. Make the rest of your break fun and refreshing!
