10 Things All Salem State Students Love

SSU isn't perfect, but we love it anyway.

Salem State

Let's be honest: Salem State has its faults. No school is perfect, but SSU is pretty darn close. So, maybe we don't like every class (or the dining hall food), but here's ten things we Vikings know we definitely love.

1. Halloween

I think this goes without saying- celebrating Halloween downtown is a must if you go to Salem State. And I'm not just talking about October 31st, I'm talking about the whole month. The city really comes alive, and there's so many things to do. As Vikings, we're lucky to be located just one mile from the action.

2. On-campus events

At Salem State, we are so lucky to have so many amazing groups and clubs that put on really awesome events. From Open Mic night's in the Starbucks lounge, to the Winter Ball, we have so many fun things going on that are (mostly) free. We even hosted Rae Sremmurd last year!

3. Upper North dining commons

Hands-down the best place to grab lunch on campus on weekdays. Boasting delicious hot meals, fresh-made quesadillas, Hershey's ice cream, and even a Burger King. Yum!

4. Cheering on our teams

Salem State has some of the best sport teams in New England. Our rugby team won the 2016 National Small College Rugby Organization's Challenge Cup National Championship, remaining 15-0 for the season. Our hockey and baseball teams are also great!

5. Delicious local restaurants

Salem is known for it's funky restaurants and eclectic menus. From Mexican to Italian to Indian, there is definitely something for everybody's taste. Some hot-spots for Salem State students include Howling Wolf, Gulu Gulu, and Engine House. RIP Orange Leaf.

6. Salsa night at Rockafellas

It's the hottest spot in-town on Wednesday nights. Never salsa danced before? Not a problem, they have a lesson before the night really begins. Regardless of your dancing ability, it's a good time.

7. Working out at the Gassett.

Because you got to work off all that delicious food! The Gassett Fitness Center is a beautiful facility that opened back in fall 2013. With tons of workout equipment, a group exercise room, and two full-size basketball courts available free to all Salem State students, it's a great place to work up a sweat!

8. Amazing theater groups

Without a doubt, Salem State is a very talented school! We have some of the best students, leaders, and athletes in New England. We're also lucky to have such incredible artists, musicians, and actors/actresses. Even if you're not majoring in the arts, there are many student groups that let you showcase your talent. From the Student Theater Ensemble, to Repertory Dance Theater to the Urban Arts Theater, there are numerous groups on campus that you can count on for putting on a great show.

9. Living by the ocean

While most of the school year is too cold for a beach day, we at Salem State are pretty lucky to live by the water. It's peaceful, and really beautiful.

10. Friends

Whether you're involved with Greek Life, a group or club, or just friends with the people who live down the hall- everybody has made friends along the way at Salem State. The things mentioned above (as well the things regretfully omitted) make Salem State an awesome place, but good friends make it home.

Now it's your turn - tell me why you love Salem State!

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
