Admit it, if you're not a twin, you’ve always wanted to be one. I am unintentionally and so happily friends with three sets of sororal twins, and even before I met them, one could say I was twin-obsessed. I even have this belief that I was supposed to be a twin, but the other baby vanished (it’s called the vanishing twin syndrome). As sad as it makes me that I possibly ate my twin, I have embraced my friend’s twinships as the ones I never had. Or I’m just a wannabe. But regardless, with twins, there are just so many opportunities for cute pictures and matching outfits. Every birthday celebration is twice the friends and twice the gifts. And sometimes, if you really listen, their voices sound the same!! My friends probably wont admit it, but I’ve even annoyed them with those silly questions everyone asks twins, like, “do you have telepathy”? But telepathy or not, twins are still awesome in so many ways. Here’s my top ten:
1. The bond
My friends laugh at me when I describe the “undeniable inseparable bond,” but I’m telling you, it exists. A twin spends nine months in the womb with someone else and that person is the first human being they ever meet. They are one egg split into two, they come into the world together, ready to conquer side by side.
2. The Balance (in fraternal twins, as my experience suggests)
I obviously love my twin friends as the unique individuals each of them are, actually, the fact that they are completely different individuals is what I love most. When they are together, they balance each other out. Most of the time, one is messy and the other is neat, one talks way too much and the other keeps to herself a lot more. I really have no preferences, but it is nice to know that I can relate to each of them in at least one way. With twins, you get the best of both worlds.
3. Giving and getting gifts
As far as gifts, twins have an advantage. I noticed that it is more acceptable for twins to give one gift to a friend from both of them, than for a friend to give twins one gift. Actually, that’s just rude, each twin should get a separate gift, after all, they are separate people.
4. Sharing classes
If you’ve ever went to school with twins, and had them in the same class, you get to discover how cool it is. You get to see how they interact with one another in an academic environment, the similarities and differences in their ideas, their similar and opposite strengths and weaknesses, and how open or shy each is in the classroom environment. And who doesn’t love a little funny sibling rivalry once in a while?
5. The studies
As a psych major, I appreciate how much easier identical, and most of the time fraternal twins have made genetic studies that have cleared up certain nature-nurture debates.
6. Best friends
I think it’s so cool that they have the same birthday, are the same age, have the same parents, have the same friends (most of the time), and go through each and every milestone together, including their first, coming into existence. Who else could be a better best friend?
7. Love and war
Another thing I’ve noticed about twins is that if you’re present during one of their bickering sessions, NEVER and I mean NEVER get in the middle. Seriously, it’s none of your business. But it’s not just because you shouldn’t get in the middle, you CANNOT get in the middle of them. No matter what, they will always defend one another and have each other’s backs. After all, they were born partners in crime.
8. THEY SHARE THE SAME BIRTHDAY
I already mentioned this, but how cool is that??
9. They are ADORABLE
Twins know exactly how to brighten your day with their cuteness. From their similar sounding voices and laughs, their similar and sometimes matching outfits, their cute and artsy photos together, and the doubled amount of warmth and love they have, twins not only make great friends for one another, but for everyone else too.
10. Inside jokes
Twins interact with each other in the womb, but even outside of the womb, their interactions are just as special. Most of the time they have some kind of inside joke, or song, or special twin thing they do that nobody understands. Because, after all, it’s a twin thing.
