For all the issues we had, it was a pretty good year for film. With that being said, let's continue the theme of hating on 2016 with a list of ten films that should be left behind along with Harambe memes, wild clowns, and those election results.
10. Now You See Me 2
Starting off with a series that should have been left in 2013 to begin with, this movie was as empty and unintelligent as the first one.
9. Ben-Hur
When it comes to remakes, this was an unneeded and messy one. The 1959 is well worth a watch but this year’s update relies too heavily on CGI.
8. Jack Reacher: Never Go Back
An overdone plot that doesn’t even make up for it with quality action set pieces.
7. Alice Through the Looking Glass
These movies are an insult to both the original movie and books. They’re not even particularly THAT bad but it’s the fact that they’re bad and didn’t need to be. A quality retelling was possible but it seems they barely tried choosing to instead focus on visuals.
6. Independence Day: Resurgence
Don’t make a sequel to a classic unless you truly have more story to tell. The threat of the aliens returning isn’t a plot point that justifies this reboot; it’s more of an excuse.
5. The Purge: Election Year
Probably one of the slightly better movies on this list, it may just be the theme that reminds us too much of other 2016 tragedies for us to revisit this in the future.
4. Warcraft
This year showed a lot of promise for video game movies finally being ‘a thing’ but after this release, all the hope now lies with Assassin’s Creed (2016) and the first signs are not promising.
3. X-Men: Apocalypse
Superhero films were the theme of Hollywood in 2016 and with so many releasing some were bound to fall short. Apocalypse sadly just did not live up to the quality that First Class and Days of Future Past gave us.
2. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows
Produced by Michael Bay.
1. Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice
Probably the biggest let down of the year, along with the entire DC cinematic universe, this movie was overly stuffed in a reaching attempt to catch up with Marvel. Just like subtitle 'Dawn of Justice', so much in this movie is just not needed.
