1. Rush makes you want to cry.
Rush takes long hours, lots of walking and talking, and constant A game. By the end of the night you've met hundreds of fresh faced, excited women but you can barely remember the house you liked the best.
2. On the other side of rush, the sorority probably barely has their crap together.
Sure the party looks beautiful and perfect. The girls are all matching and they all look like perfection. I promise you this though: the only thing keeping this all together is yards and yards of duct tape, blister bandaids, and enough Starbucks to give you slight heart palpitations.
3. It costs a lot of money.
There are chapter dues, national dues, tickets for formals and socials, and cash for spirit wear and crafting. For me though, the costs were well worth it. Many sororities offer payment plans to help it be manageable and will totally work with you. Their main goal is to keep the organization running, not to suck you dry.
4. Your sisters go far beyond your letters.
Being in Greek Life means that you'll have friends in tons of different sororities. Different organizations work together frequently for fellowship, fundraising, and social events. It's probably one of the coolest parts about Greek Life.
5. Sometimes, it's really boring.
Chapter doesn't look like Elle Woods voting on toilet paper and everyone snapping along in agreement with the president. It looks like logistical nightmares, people talking over each other, and 100+ women trying to accomplish a list of goals.
6. A sorority can be an immovable force.
When you have that many like minded and driven women in organization, shit is going to get done. You haven't seen something so awe-inspiring as a fundraising committee pulling off the single most successful event just because they believe in their cause.
7. We're not nearly as cliquey as we look.
Yes we have our inside jokes and handshakes, but that's because we were founded on the basis of being a members only organization. I promise you though, if you go up to a group of sorority girls at a party and ask to hangout/dance/drink with them, they'll just be jazzed to have another body to talk to a make friends with.
8. Recruiting becomes part of your nature.
Everywhere you go, you find yourself recruiting for your sorority. This can come off as pushy or desperate, but it's really just because we are so passionate about our organization. We will talk your ear off about it and then invite you to a social or coffee date just to show you more about us.
9. Big changes take time.
You can't walk into a sorority as president and expect to change everything over night. We are an organization with over a hundred years of history, and it's not going to change right away. Votes in the chapter, region, and nationals need to happen before ANYTHING major will ever change. But with perseverance, changes will be made.
10. It is one of the most time consuming and rewarding experiences of your life.
Don't sign up for Greek Life if you're insanely busy already. There are so many different time commitments that happen within Greek Life but every single one is so rewarding. You might stay up one night till two in the morning prepping the house for rush, or pull your hair out over a crafting nightmare, but in the end you won't trade it for the world.
