Why do professors feel the need to rule like tyrants?

Ever since I was little, the teachers in my life have had an immense impact on who I would become. In preschool, my teacher taught me how to be kind to others. In kindergarten, my teachers helped me thrive outside of my home. I refused to let go of the grasp I had on my mother and bawled my eyes out every time she left me. If it wasn't for a wonderful woman named Sally, I would not have the sort of independence I have today. In first grade, my teacher helped me realize that it was okay for Drew and I to be attached at the hip. They let me know that it wasn't weird and that having a sidekick was a blessing. In middle school, I was able to progress in class more than ever before. In high school, I was taught how to treat people with respect.

It was rare for me to come face to face with a teacher I felt uncomfortable around. I grew up believing that teachers wanted to teach in order to help their students grow and thrive. I have always believed that they want to help mold the minds of younger generations in order to better not just our lives, but the future as a whole.

Flash forward to college. A multitude of my friends and acquaintances have been faced with troubles regarding professors' teaching styles. Fortunately, I have yet to be faced with educators that have created an unfair environment for their students. Being an outsider to this problem, I have become enraged. Students don't want to disrespect their teachers. Clearly, they have had success in order to fill a teaching job at the College. Students fear that they will get consequences for standing up for their opinions. Others choose to keep their mouths shut to please their professor. Apparently, some teachers do not teach for the sake of helping others.

Why is that certain teachers set their students up for failure rather than help them to succeed? In my opinion, professors are not there to weed out weak students. They're supposed to create growth, spark knowledge and inspiration. They're intended to help students learn.

My sister works her ass off studying as a Biology major. Unfortunately, because of the way the system has been built, she struggled through one of her classes. After studying night and day and spending weeks in the library, there was nothing more she could do to raise the grade she fought so hard to earn. The information became ingrained in her mind. She was so well-read about the information that she was able to teach it to me with her eyes closed. However, when it came to the day of the exam, her teacher made it impossible to pass. Students are supposed to be learning, not fearing for an F the entire time.

Why is it that so much pressure is placed upon people our age? We are meant to be given a path of guidance, not a journey to failure. There must be something wrong with the class itself if everyone is failing. Why are so many schools unable to see that? Students are supposed to be able to have a personal life. School should not consume their everyday lives. If fear is instilled in students, people won’t want to learn. Education should be fun and engaging. Changes need to be made. I refuse to sit idly by when so many close friends of mine are being taken advantage of by teachers who are meant to better their lives. This is something that needs to be brought to the public's attention. Ruling on a power trip creates more harm than good.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
