Whether you are a die-hard democrat or a red hot republican, it is no secret that no one really knows where our country is headed politically. After George Washington’s first term as President, he wasn’t too sure either. Washington was the first person to say a two party government system would lead to mayhem. He detected the dangers of sectionalism between the North and the South, and warned that political caucuses could potentially gain enough power to annihilate the laws put in place by Congress (Laws today we would rule unconstitutional). Washington was against what he called “alternate domination." He did not believe one party should have temporary power over the other, being that this would lead to spiteful dictation. Perhaps Washington would throw today’s candidates for a loop if he were here, or maybe he is rolling over in his grave the further this year’s election process drags on. Either way, this one’s for you man:
An Ode To Present Day America
Oh the flag of stars and stripes,
How you fly with glory.
We have great people of a thousand types,
White and black and brown alike; each with their own story.
Power trips and nuclear threats is how we do it here,
Money makes politicians whisper promises in your ear.
Our schools are ranked one for fun,
Please, Johnny, put away your shooting gun.
Where there aren’t police or hounds at prom,
Man, those other countries got it wrong!
The Deep South can’t move on from the Civil War,
Don’t buy your clothes too tight, you’ll be labeled a whore.
Thirteen trillion in debt we stand,
But do not fret, we try and justify with God’s hand.
What a grand time to be alive,
You don’t even have to be qualified to thrive.
People get showered with government checks,
The guy popping pills gets to drive a Corvette.
While the woman at work with a master’s degree,
Owes one hundred thousand and seventy-three.
Slowly but surely time will fly,
But half still look for answers in the sky.
Starvation is local, but people are fat,
We have the best dining, would you like fries with that?
The top one percent keeps growing oh my!
What will the rest have to do to get by?
Jewels, cars, and penthouse apartments vs,
Long shifts, pizzas, and cleaning the carpets.
The middle class catering company is long out of business,
What will happen when we have to skip Christmas?
Don’t worry your head, this is a democracy,
A land of the people! Our votes will set us free.
There’s Trump and Kasich, and Bernie and Cruz,
And a woman named Hillary who wears sensible shoes.
Soon one will be our leader of this marvelous estate,
The Electoral College will make it fair, just smile and wait.
What a great country over the years,
Even know the laws were written over a couple of beers.
I am thankful to be here, don’t get me wrong.
Where else in the world can everyone sing their own freedom song?
