Unless you have been living under a rock for the past seven years, you know all about the ongoing feud between Taylor Swift and Kanye West. It all started when West and took to the stage at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards during Swift's speech for Best Female Video for "You Belong With Me." Basically, before she even had the chance to give her speech, West ran up on stage and said, "Yo, Taylor, I'm really happy for you and I'mma let you finish, but Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time. One of the best videos of all time!," in reference to her music video for "Single Ladies." West was booed and handed the microphone back to Swift, who didn't get a chance to finish her acceptance speech. Any huge Taylor Swift fans can pin this moment to the time that fueled our dislike for Kanye West.
Seven years later, West has added fuel to the fire once again. Although West and Swift have been somewhat friendly in recent years, he has now debuted his new album "The Life of Pablo," and included his is new song "Famous" referencing Taylor Swift. The lyrics say, "I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex, I made that b**** famous."
Personally, I think it's ridiculous that he felt the need to put that in his song at all. Kanye West certainly did not make Taylor Swift famous and there was also no need for him to say they might have sex, especially considering he is married and she is in a relationship.
West even tried to say afterward that he talked on the phone with Swift for an hour about the lyrics and that they were actually heridea and she approved it. For him to say this is also ridiculous, because it's been proven by her reps that she never said any of that and that she was never even approached about it by West. Additionally, after the song came out her brother, Austin Swift, posted a video on Instagram of himself throwing out his Yeezy shoes, saying that he's "Getting a head start on some spring cleaning." The video can be seen here:
Of course Taylor Swift being the classy woman she is, gave a great response to the lyrics during her 2016 Grammy's acceptance speech for Album of the Year. She said, "As the first woman to win album of the year at the Grammy's twice, I want to say to all the young women out there: There are going to be people along the way who will try to undercut your success or take credit for your accomplishments or your fame. But if you just focus on the work and you don’t let those people sidetrack you, someday when you get where you’re going, you’ll look around and you will know that it was you and the people who love you who put you there and that will be the greatest feeling in the world." You can see the video here:
Overall, I think Taylor Swift handled the situation with such grace and class. Regardless of how you feel about her music, at the very least she is a woman who can be a role model for every young girl out there. People may criticize her, and people (like Kanye West) may try to take credit for her success, but she is the person that got her to where she is today and no one can take that away from her.
From Swifties everywhere, congratulations on all of your success, Taylor!
