Ever since the 2009 VMAs when Taylor Swift beat out Beyoncé for best female video and Kanye blew up her spot, there has been an immense amount of beef between the two. The disrespect that Kanye displayed was totally uncalled for and was not well received by Swift’s posse and other celebrities. An overwhelming amount of people took Taylor’s side and this moment is arguably one of the most memorable within the 21st Century popular culture. After this stunt, whenever the two would interact there was always a bout of tension present as well as under the breath comments directed towards one another.
Fast-forwarding a couple of years to 2016, the beef between the two seemed to be a lot less prominent. That was until Thursday, Feb. 11th when West released his album “The Life of Pablo” and allegedly raps “I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex./Why? I made that b***h famous.” Taylor Swift fans alongside many within the music world were outraged by West’s derogatory and borderline misogynist words. After word of these lyrics had gotten out in the media and were exposed to the public Kanye began to do some serious damage control and reported that he had gotten permission to use that vulgar language. After more pieces of this issue began to surface, it was revealed that Kanye’s allegations were in fact not accurate and Swift’s camp denies any permission given to the rap artist.
On Feb. 15th, 2016 the 58th Annual Grammy Awards took place at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. It was an event jam-packed with the best of the best from the music industry and an evening filled with beautiful music. In attendance was Taylor Swift as she was nominated for Album of the Year, Record Of The Year, Song Of The Year, Best Pop Solo Performance, Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, Best Pop Vocal Album and Best Music Video. Out of all of these nominations, she went home with Best Music Video, Best Pop Vocal Album and Album Of The Year. As Taylor Swift graciously accepted all of her awards, it was when she made her speech after receiving Album Of The Year that caused a lot of buzz. She essentially did a sub-tweet at Kanye (without actually tweeting anything) and called him out (in the nicest way possible) for all of his backhanded comments towards her while empowering her female fans all throughout the country.
Taylor Swift definitely has the reputation in the industry as being this kind of goodie-goodie individual and you never really hear anything bad about her. Even when she gets belittled and bashed, she holds her head up high and proves how talented and amazing she is through her work and success. The kind of attitude that she possesses is truly amazing and a great example for all of her fans. At the end of the day, I think that Taylor won this battle, especially since she snagged Album Of The Year.
