Taught in a Dream

Can you learn about reality in a dream before you face it in "real life"?

Taught in a Dream

Dreaming is one of the most mystical of experiences - images flashing and appearing in places both foreign and familiar. There is no clear reason why we dream, yet it seems to be valued among sleepers everywhere. There is a common myth about dreams that claims people can only see faces of people that they have met in their life while awake. In particular, I have had one dream that I can't explain even until today and it happened when I was only five years old. I would like to spend the rest of this article telling you about this dream; how I learned about an aspect of life in a dream before it manifested in reality. I understand that this experience of mine is impossible to test empirically, therefore, I promise to uphold the utmost honesty as to exactly how this dream unfolded.

When I was in kindergarten, I would ride the bus to and from school every day. I had a crush on this girl who happened to be in second grade (I was precocious). One afternoon, on our ride home from school, I sat next to her and she gave me two quarters as a kind of "I like you". I think about it now, and I am quite sure she was just being nice. It didn't even matter. I was far too shy, and when I got home, I immediately threw the quarters in the trash - for which my mom scolded me. I went to sleep that night and had a very confusing dream for a five-year-old; perhaps a dream that came far too soon considering its contents. In this dream, I was performing a sexual act on the girl that gave me these two coins as a present. However, I had no clue what the hell I saw, but I woke up immediately. The dream only lasted for what seemed like 15 seconds, but it was long enough to terrify a little kid.

When I woke up in the morning, I couldn't wait to ask my mom about what had experienced. I walked up to her in the kitchen and asked, "Mom, is it normal for boys to lick girls down there?" My mother, laughing in panic, said, "No, no, no. You'll get sick!" I was extremely skeptical, but I took her word for it.

As I said earlier, I can not explain how it was possible that I could learn about sex through a dream, and not just sex, but a very specific sexual act. I have been either blessed or genetically impressed with a fantastic long-term memory, and because of that, I can recall these rather peculiar experiences in my past and reflect on them now as an adult. What is more striking about this dream, is that it accurately depicted a part of reality that I have no conscious recollection of before the dream occurred. I recently tried to find more information about this topic and whether or not anybody else has had a similar experience. But when I searched "learning about sex in dreams" in google, I got nothing but tips on how to spice up one's love life inside what is called a "lucid dream". So, once again, I am left in the dark as to why we can learn about reality in our dreams.

I was talking to my friend, Nathan Daniels, about this specific dream in which he found some common ground. His dream was not sexual in nature, but he told me that when he was a young boy he listened to the song called "The Freshman" by The Verve Pipe. "The Freshman" was written by the two members of the band who felt guilty about a friend that committed suicide in high school. Well, Nate told me that in one of his dreams, he was told that the song was about suicide before he could even fully grasp the concept of a person taking their own life. Another testimony of how it may be possible to learn about certain aspects of life before you may encounter them.

Thank you for reading this article and listening to my story. Dreams are one area of the human mind that really spark my interest, and I think are undervalued and underexplored by the bulk of society. If you would like, please leave feedback or perhaps share an unexplainable experience that you have had with a dream.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
