Tallahassee's Year in EDM

Tallahassee's Year in EDM

What does eardrum-busting bass, world class DJ's, and uncontrollable dance moves all have in common at Florida State University? They will all be heavily engaged in your party pleasures this fall at Coliseum Tallahassee.

The electronic dance music culture will be in full bloom in the coming months thanks to Coliseum's legendary 2014 artist lineup. Ravers agree, exclaiming their excitement for the future shows. One fan says, “I'm just impressed by Coliseum's go-getter mentality. These are some top worldwide DJ's and for them to come play at a relatively small venue in Florida must mean Coliseum has some powerful credibility.”

With genres ranging from trance, to electro house, to glitch and dubstep, to trap, and with the recently popular hardstyle mixins, EDM lovers all around Tallahassee are in heaven. Fans will get to experience music sets by DJ's from all around the world: Paul van Dyk, Dada Life, Zeds Dead, Carnage, Porter Robinson, and Skrillex, proving even further that Coliseum has really outdone themselves.

If you're wondering why these certain DJ's are such a big deal, take note of their past credentials. Paul van Dyk has placed on DJ Mag's top 100 for several years and has received awards such as “America's Favorite DJ” and “Best Trance DJ” in years past. Zeds Dead and Skrillex are famous for their hardcore dubstep beats in festivals worldwide such as TomorrowLand in Belgium and Ultra Music Festival in Miami. Porter Robinson, merely 22 years old out of North Carolina, has produced two original albums already and has also made appearances at festivals like TomorrowLand, Electric Zoo, and Coachella. If this isn't enough to make your ears yearn electrifying melodies, you're crazy.

So, what's up with this electronic music obsession anyway and what's the reason for this new revolution? Because technology is advancing at such a fast pace, this electronic music culture is also finding more and more roots in the industry. It's about breaking the boundaries of sound. EDM lovers mark their movement by the term 'PLUR', meaning Peace, Love, Unity, Respect. This philosophy is meant to address the underlying sense of community that exists between fans, one that most other music fans overlook when observing electronic dance music. “People think EDM is just about DJ's pressing some buttons on a computer or replaying old songs with a small twist. If they knew anything about it, they'd know how much originality exists,” an avid fan comments.

Now that you've learned where EDM came from, take a look at who's coming to you this fall:

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
