"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was" .... 2015.
2015 was quite an incredible year for fashion, makeup, music, and of course, the stars. However, balancing out the fabulousness were some horrible trends that still keep us awake in the middle of the night. We can't wait to take the good and leave the rest behind, and ensure that 2016 will be an amazing year full of awesome.
Here's everything we loved and loathed about 2k15:
LOVED:
1. Adidas
If only I knew that these classic kicks would make a comeback, I would have highly considered not giving away my multiple, different colored pairs back in fifth grade. Following in the footsteps of high waisted skirts, Adidas seem to be making quite an impressive and successful return back onto the feet of young adults everywhere. Adidas give off a trendy aurora matched with almost anything, they're conformable, and as time has shown, they will never go out of style! Make sure to grab a pair this holiday season before they sell out because they will. (If the Victoria Secret Angel Candice Swanepoel wears them, they must be worthy of our attention)
2. Contouring
We came, we saw, we contoured! This year, the basic b*tches of America really stepped up their game. It's no secret that the Kardashians' face transforming makeup secret has spread like wildfire, but thanks to extremely beneficial innovative brushes and pallets, anyone who isn't a member of the Kardashian Klan can now achieve this beautiful look.
And if you're still having trouble, I HIGHLY recommend the Kat Von D Shade and Light Contouring Kit, and while you're at it, please buy the brush that accompanies the kit so you can achieve your ideal look.
3. Leotards
If you thought that your leotard-wearing days ended the second you quit ballet, you thought wrong. Leotards are huge, and they're becoming a respectable item in mainstream fashion. Leotard tops are super great because you don't have to worry about your shirt riding up, or hanging awkwardly around your shorts, skirts, jeans, etc. Leotard tops allow you to try out bold and sexy looks, without having to worry about them not blending seamlessly with the remainder of your outfit.
4. Justin Bieber
We love when celebrities go off the radar and get into trouble because it almost always results in an amazing new album! We gave the Biebs a pass back in 2014 and we never looked back because it gave us Purpose. Having just recently announced his highly anticipated retribution tour kicking off in 2016, Justin Bieber is stoked to say "Sorry" to all of his fans for messing with Selena's heart, breaking the law, and just being a jerk. But lucky for JB, the only tears he needs to cry are happy ones! We're ready for him to Love [Him]self again, because we already love him and his new tunes more than words can say.
5. Finstas
For those of you who haven't jumped on board this massively popular trend, you 100 percent will in 2016. Instead of cloaking selfies with intense editing apps and dramatic filters, our generation has started to embrace our flaws, and privately display them for our closest 50 friends on our Fake Instagram!
Finstas are fun, fabulous, and provide a safe outlet for us to vent about our lives, flood our feeds with ugly selfies, shamelessly share our food pics, post the videos we were never brave enough to post on our Snap Chat stories, and just be ourselves around the people who love us and won't judge us. Self-embarrassment is the new self-confidence, so get ready to let loose and be you this upcoming year.
LOATHED:
1. Shia LeBouf
Okay seriously, why is he still even relevant? After his hugely embarrassing and exceedingly public plagiarizing scandal, Shia (temporarily) kissed Hollywood goodbye, but to everyone's surprise, returned to star in Sia's Elastic Heart music video, alongside preteen dancing sensation Maddie Ziegler. This raised a lot of questions and started, even more, controversy. Nevertheless, Shia shrugged off the bad press, and accepting that the haters are likely always gonna hate, he gave us yet another reason to dislike him: he hosted a marathon of all of his movies. He shamelessly watched them alongside some (un)lucky fans, narcissistically commending himself for years of gracing H-wood with his presence.
2. Kylie Jenner's Lips
ATTENTION ANYONE BETWEEN THE AGES OF 10 AND 20 WITH AVERAGE SIZED LIPS: You are not alone! In fact, you are quite normal, so congratulations! What isn't normal is for a seventeen-year-old to get lip injections and change her still developing face. Please don't think that this is normal. Please don't suck your lips in a shot glass and make them swollen so you can look more like a narcissistic teenager famous for being famous. Instead, just throw on some cute lip liner (Nars and Mac make great ones), and love you for YOU. Makeup can do incredible things, so explore and have fun a little, because you can still feel confident and take killer selfies without plastic surgery. Aspire to be your own person and a little less like the unattainable reality star Kylie Jenner. But if you don't believe us, believe this...
Expectations:
Reality:
Kylie: 1, Normal People/Youtube Queen Jenna Marbles: 0
3. Man Buns
I don't really know what to say about this trend, other than the fact that it has me really missing the days when boys rocked the Justin Beiber side-banged hairdo. Let me tell you, I took those days for granted, because apparently now it's socially acceptable and apparently fashionable for boys to wear their hair in buns; a look most girls only resort to when they are exhausted, done with life, and super stressed. Let's bring back short, cropped, clean-cut looks and let's encourage boys everywhere to look more put together next year. C'mon ladies, who's up for the challenge?
4. Whipping
Please, oh please, dancing gods, let this move die with 2015. Silento may produce extremely annoying yet undeniably catchy songs, but we've had it with the whip/nae nae routine. Enough is enough! If the first potential female president can't master this, we may as well give up now and never think about it again.
Need I go on?
5. Acrylic Nails
Quite frankly, I'm not sure why people still insist on destroying their natural nail beds with acrylics when a healthier, long-lasting, perfectly posh alternative exists! I converted to gel nails, and I never looked back, nor would I ever consider putting my nails through acrylics again. Gels are comfortable, affordable, aren't at risk of breaking or annoying you anytime you text, eat, type, etc., plus they are super soft and look very natural. Even my grandma swears by them! Leave acrylics behind, and ring in the new year with some fresh new gels.
We can't wait for what the future holds, and we are so ready to kick off 2016 with our favorite trends. Happy holidays!
