He then proceeded to go on about the short hairstyles, particularly referring to the hairstyles black women wear after doing the big chop. Everyone in the audience was bickering among themselves and making faces. Even my friends and I were looking at each other. After that, the audience died down and we continued with the event.
Did I forget to mention that the man who said this was a BLACK MAN?
And no, this is definitely not going to be a bashing black men article. I'm only mentioning this because of the fact that he, as a black man, would make a comment like that knowing that he has the same hair type as us. He also should have been uplifting us instead of just shaming those he didn't think could rock a natural/short hairstyle.
What he meant was that not everyone can pull off natural hair. I know, dumb right? Well let me tell you guys this:

I know we have some awkward stages after the big chop. Learning how to twist, curl, style and match it with accessories and makeup is strange at first. But that doesn't mean that you shouldn't wear out your hair. If I did all of that cutting, you're definitely going to get whatever comes out of that bonnet whether you like it or not. If that hair is growing out of your head, I would definitely consider your natural hair to be for "everybody," right?
So, going back to that comment that man made, did he mean any harm? Well, I can't really tell you that. Did he end up causing harm? Absolutely, because he sounded ignorant. But that shouldn't stop you from wearing out your own hair.
If you are feeling uncomfortable about your hair or having big chop regrets, DON'T.
Not everyone grows a full Afro after cutting their hair. You always start small and then work your way up. In this case, you cut your hair short and eventually it grows. Hair always grows back. In a couple of years (or maybe even months), you will grow a huge head of hair, longer than how your damaged hair was. Soon, you will look back and laugh about how you were worked up over nothing. There's nothing that isn't natural about that. That's like saying God made a mistake, which he never does.
Clearly, everyone's hair is made for them.

I went through so much for good hair.
Although I'm in the process of (slowly) growing out my hair into an awkward bob, I suffered through the pixie cut trend for four long years. I cut my hair my freshman year of high school after months of begging and begging my grandmother for even a simple trim. I, at first, wanted a bob about three inches above my shoulders, but after looking around Google and Pinterest for inspiration on "short hair", I stumbled upon the cliche Tumblr-esque pixie cuts. Of course I immediately fell in love. But as everyone with a pixie cut can tell you, there are MANY cons to getting this hairstyle.
1. "I liked your long hair better!"
You always receive this comment from your acquaintances who think they need to just help you out a little.
2. "I just believe women should have long hair."
It usually comes from older men who have given you their unsolicited thoughts on your hair.
3. "You're lucky! It's so much less work to style!"
My cabinet full of mousses, hair sprays, hair gels, and my four different hair brushes say otherwise.
4. "Is she a lesbian?"
Usually only whispered just above earshot. When it's said to you, they're assuming it, not asking. Not that I'm not gay, but maybe don't assume from the hair.
5. "You're sacrificing a lot for a trend, don't you think?"
Not a trend, I just have personal opinions.
6. "Do you need to speak to the manager?"
It's just a haircut. Also, I have too much anxiety to confront someone of authority about anything.
7."When are you going to grow your hair out?"
Maybe never. Who knows?
8."You cut your hair AGAIN?"
Everyone has to cut their hair eventually, even if it's just a trim.
9. "Sorry, I just like girls that have something to hold on to."
Stop sexualizing hair!!!!!!
10. "Are you a boy or a girl?"
Not that it matters to you, but my D-cups would probably answer your question.
As negative as I make short hair seem, cutting all my hair off was the best and most freeing decision I ever made and I wouldn't discourage anyone else from trying it. Even though you'll go through a lot, it's worth being happy with yourself
