When breakfast comes to your mind, the first thing you think about isn't normally Mexican food. However, Taco Bell has been competing with the likes of McDonald's and Dunkin Donuts since introducing their own breakfast menu in March, 2014. A zesty twist on breakfast is just what you need in your breakfast offerings.
With the increase in Taco Bell's "Breakfast Defectors," the chain has started to create a unique twist on the traditional breakfast and take some market share of breakfast items from giants like McDonald's and Dunkin Donuts. Taco Bell has done an excellent job at identifying millennials' interests and continue to create a sense of community with its Breakfast Defectors campaign. A Breakfast Defector is someone who is tired of the same old routine of breakfast and wants something that's going to wow them. Taco Bell took that insight and developed a zesty twist to the breakfast menu with items such as the A.M. Crunchwrap, Grilled Breakfast Burrito, and Cinnabon Delights.
Taco Bell has made it a statement to target its competitor, McDonald's, in its breakfast ads. The chain doesn't want to be seen as the providing a breakfast similar to others. According to Chris Brandt, Taco Bell's Chief Marketing Officer, "We're pushing against that routine...we don't want to look like everyone else." Whether it's portraying Ronald McDonald as a Cold War Era dictator or just having real-life Ronald McDonalds eat their food, Taco Bell is constantly trying to steal market share from the burger giant.
On November 5, 2015, Taco Bell gave out free A.M. Crunchwraps as a promotion for stealing a base in the World Series. This is when I first experienced Taco Bell's breakfast. At first, I was hesitant to try it because of the stigma associated with the brand's food quality, but I quickly overcame that and sunk my teeth in for the first bite. I was instantly amazed at how great it tasted. It's not the sausage, has brown, or tortilla that wows you, but rather the sauce. The sauce applied to the wrap gives a slightly spicy taste which is unlike any other breakfast item offered. The Crunchwrap is also great to hold while driving and very convenient. If you get the meal, you're also given a 2-pack of Cinnabon Delights, which are Cinnabon balls with icing that oozes out once bitten into. This sweet treat is the perfect complement to the zesty wrap. I owe Lorenzo Cain a huge thank you for stealing that base in Game 1 and getting me to try this severely underrated breakfast.
If you're looking to spice up your breakfast options, don't be afraid to add something unusual to the list. Let the hesitation go and have your tastebuds run wild. Be the next Breakfast Defector.
