Sweetly Broken, Wholly Surrendered

Strength in vulnerability.

Sweetly Broken, Wholly Surrendered
Caroline Connly

Strength can be displayed in many ways, through courage or sheer determination. However, vulnerability is one of the most important strengths a human can exhibit. For me, vulnerability has always been something I have struggled with.

Expressing my feelings through words are so much easier for me, than bearing the feelings buried deep inside my soul out loud. Some find expression in running away with the wind, others spend hours at the gym sweating out every inch of sadness from within them. And some point, while others sing and dance. We all have our own form of expression -- our own way of melting all the emotions inside into something much more beautiful.

There is so much hatred in this world, what right do we have to be sad? But that's just it. It is not always our right, our chosen destiny or the paths we wish to cross.

We are not in complete control.

It is important to recognize and embrace our vulnerability. We are at the mercy of those around us. How others feel, shapes our very own emotions whether we realize it or not. The way we view the world is a product of how vulnerable we allow ourselves to be.

Our world isn't perfect, in fact, it is very broken. But the broken pieces of our vulnerable hearts allow cracks of light to shine through radiating from our soul.

Only by acknowledging the darkness in our worlds can we truly appreciate the brilliant light that shines within us. Our deepest fears and worries can be conquered with the gentle touch of a human hand.

Vulnerability is what makes us humans. In these moments of vulnerability is where our dreams are born and our devoted empathy for others takes root.

To be vulnerable is to be broken. But there is beauty in all of the deepest broken cracks of our hearts -- we are all sweetly broken and wholly surrendered.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
