4 Tips For Surviving Those Last Two Years Of High School

High school is hard. Everyone seems to know that going in, but I don’t think the stress and the realization of that kicks in until you’re halfway done. Being a junior in high school, I’ve had my fair share of panic attacks, breakdowns, and sob stories. It’s a roller coaster and I’ve had some of my best and worst times during my first two years. Although I’m only halfway through, I think I’ve gotten a hang of this whole "school" thing. Here are a few ways to help you get through those last two years.

1. Don’t Get Left Behind.

Junior year of high school is easily the hardest year academically. This is the year that colleges really look at and is the year that you take your placement test (ACT, SAT.) So challenge yourself, work hard and keep up with studies. It really is important.

2. Breathe.

With all that being said, don’t smother yourself in books and have high school consume your life. Studying is important sure, but taking mental breaks is equally important. Taking your mental health into consideration is something school systems have a hard time doing, so unfortunately, it’s something you’ll have to do yourself. Take naps, take walks, call friends, party, listen to music or do anything that makes you relax and keeps you happy. Academics are not everything and your mental health is more important, so be sure to take good care of it so it can take care of you.

3. Don’t Be Bitter.

Everyone in school knows that it sucks a majority of the time. Complaining and whining about how tired you are, how much homework you have and how much you think your teacher hates you does not do anyone any good. Go to school, let it be what it’s going to be, graduate, and make a fabulous future for yourself. Being mad at school and being negative are no fun and are very annoying. Truthfully, no one cares about how much you hate it.

4. Pay People No Mind.

High schoolers are mean. They’re closed-minded, rude, and cliquey. This relates to my last point, let it be what it’s going to be and don’t get hung up on anyone. If you don’t have a lot of friends or people to talk to in class, just remember what you’re there to do in the first place. You’re there to learn because school is your job. Don’t let people (especially your boyfriends and girlfriends) alter your main academic goal and work hard so you can go to a school you actually want to attend.

There are my few helpful tips that are getting me through the rest of school and I hope they work for you too.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
