It is not uncommon for college students to undergo a period of the "college blues." This could be because you are away from home for long periods of time, finding yourself overwhelmed with schoolwork, or just simply out of your comfort zone. Whether you are a freshman or a senior, we have all experienced this in one way or another.
College is not an easy task to take on. When you aren't attending classes, you are studying, working or stressing about the deadlines you need to make, while also trying to make time for yourself. Not only are you faced with having to perfect your time management, but you also have costly loans that seem to linger in the back of your mind through this whole process. It is a lot of pressure to make sure you keep your grades up and keep your life on track when you feel so young at the same time. Being broke from college isn't too enjoyable, either. Sometimes it seems as if your friends and family that didn't choose to go to college don't understand the daily struggles you need to overcome, but do not worry, you are not the only one.
Dealing with school has its downfalls, but overall you are there for one ultimate goal; to get an education and further your future career. Times are going to get rough, classes are going to challenge you, but in the end, you need to reassure yourself that you can do it, because you can. The best way to keep yourself on track in college is by surrounding yourself with good supportive people around you. Having support seems simple, but it can take you far and benefit you greatly. When you are feeling homesick, having good friends to pick you up and reassure you is a great way to help you thrive.
Never let anyone tear you down. From time to time you are going to run into people that will make you question your life decisions which could unfortunately even be family members. This can be disheartening because it is hard to hear negative comments about a path you are taking when clearly passionate about it. However, it is good to take any advice with a grain of salt and essentially do what your heart tells you to.
Always remember nothing is permanent. What seems appealing to you today may not be appealing to you years from now. As humans, we are ever-changing and this is completely natural. If you are unhappy with a situation, you have the power to influence it in a way that can produce change. This includes changing your major, finding new friends or simply cutting out people in your life that do not have a positive impact on you.
Make time for yourself! Making time for yourself is a great way to not only help you take a step back from schoolwork but it will put aside some stress. As humans, we need ways to cope with stress and work so taking the time to workout, go dancing, make music or paint can greatly benefit you. So find your niche and run with it!
College can sometimes seem impossible, but remember you have options to help you get through it. The "college blues" aren't forever and you have the power to pull yourself out of it. Reach out to peers, give yourself credit for your hard work without being too hard on yourself and enjoy your life, you only have one!
