12 Ways To Be Your Best Self During Mercury Retrograde

Don't let Mercury get you down from July 26 until August 19!

Mercury retrograde

The planets have been full frontal during summer 2018. In the Northern Hemisphere, Saturn, and Mars, especially, have been visible in the night sky. Now, from July 26 until August 19, Mercury will be in retrograde.

First off, while you've likely heard the phrase "Mercury in retrograde" a lot, what does it actually mean? When Mercury is in retrograde, Mercury seems to move in an opposite direction from the rest of the planets orbiting the sun. But the planet is not actually switching directions. Instead, as the earth passes Mercury, it is simply moving at a faster rate, creating the illusion that Mercury is moving in the opposite direction.

Mercury retrograde is said to majorly influence communication, technology, and planning. Whether or not this truly does affect us, (or if it's just a placebo effect) is up to the jury. But if you do feel the effects, don't let it get you down! Instead, look at this as a time to refresh and restart. With the end of summer approaching, there is no better time to reset and get ready for the new season ahead.

1. Manage your schedule

Because Mercury retrograde can affect plans and timing, now is the time to review your schedule. Prioritize and organize what you have planned for your week. Making a check list or keeping a planner can help you sort out everything you need to do. Especially with a new school year creeping in (or the busy season at work), it's really important to start to straighten out your to-do list.

2. Think before you speak

Mercury retrograde is said to affect relationships and communication. If you're feeling tense with someone, be sure to step down and think about what you say before you say it. It's important to clear your mind and relax before getting into an argument with someone.

3. Exercise self-care

Stress levels can rise during retrograde, so I recommend hitting the gym to help relieve some of those feelings and to also take care of yourself! Whatever your favorite way to workout is: swimming, cycling, running, Pilates, yoga... just do it! Your body and mind will thank you!

4. Spend time with your friends

Even though meddlesome Mercury can make communication difficult, it's still important to make time for your friends. Even if you feel like canceling your plans and crawling under the covers, don't neglect your relationships. Spending time with friends and laughing can help reduce stress levels. We are all in this together.

5. Revisit an old project

Retrogrades of any sort can make the past seem particularly appealing, to the point it might distract you from what's going on in the present. But if your nostalgia has inspired you to revisit an old hobby or abandoned project, that's actually a good thing. Sometimes retrogrades arrive to remind us of a passion we'd forgotten or overlooked because life was moving too fast.

6. Fuel your insides

Good nutrition is important year-round, but especially during retrograde. When you feel frazzled, making sure you take care of yourself inside can show on the outside. I recommend "brain food" to help keep your mind strong. Blueberries, nuts & seeds, avocados, and food containing Omega-3s can help you feel your best.

7. Stay hydrated

Another way to fuel your brain is to stay hydrated. Drinking enough water will help you be more alert and ready to take on whatever retrograde brings your day.

8. Re...

You can tackle retrograde by reacting with "re" words.

Think: review, reconnect, refresh, recommit, relax.

9. Unplug and unwind

Sometimes the daily barrage of messages and notifications can really fry your brain. During these dog days of summer, find some time for yourself and put down the phone or laptop. Read a book, lounge by the pool, or take a hike. Get out and enjoy nature. That blue light is not good for your mind or your eyes.

10. Get some rest

During summer, I tend to stay up late. But it's also important to get enough sleep. Resting will help your brain process the day. With communication lines getting twisted, make sure you're allowing your brain time to relax and process your thoughts during REM sleep.

11. Listen to the universe

A major cause of stress at Mercury retrograde is frustration from mishaps, things breaking down, computers going black. Try to take a break from the usual routine.

Just observe and see what happens, and be open to the past returning for review. If it's coming back, there's likely something more to learn or release from it. This can be a good (and productive) time, in its own way.

12. Get clarity from crystals

If you use crystals, they can help you during this phase. Blue stones are great for opening up your throat chakra.. .and the lines of communication. Clear quartz is another wonderful crystal during retrograde. You can read more about suggested crystals here: Crystals for Mercury Retrograde

One last piece of advice for surviving Mercury retrograde? Don't panic. Things may go awry due to planetary activity, but you shouldn't let Mercury's enjoying its backspin rule your life. Instead, keep an eye on the sectors that this planet is believed to affect (communication, technology, plans) and consider how these influences may trickle down into your life in particular.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
