Alright ladies and gentlemen, the time is upon us. The most magical time of year, when you have a valid excuse to leave after the food, but before your uncle starts snoring on the couch. You have important planning to do if you want to get the most out of this once-a-year phenomenon. Whether you're a seasoned pro or this is your first time taking on the madness of Black Friday, here are a few helpful tips.
The Preparation:
1. Timing is Everything: Check to see what time every store you want to go to opens. While many open at midnight, a few may open the doors either right after dinner or several hours after midnight, such as 2 or 3am. Set a goal for how long you would like to spend in each location.
2. Check That List Twice: Make a list of people you need to get gifts for in advance (or use the Reminder App on your phone). Knowing what to get for who will be helpful when you're standing at the checkout line wondering why you picked up a Tickle Me Elmo but aren't shopping for any kids.
3. Buy Fashion, Don't Bring Fashion: Dress as comfortably as you can. That's right, I'm talking sneakers and sweatpants. No one will even notice what you're wearing, and it will be way easier to maneuver the stores.
4. Resist the Midnight Feast: Before heading out to the stores, have a snack and maybe some coffee or tea. Taking a slice of pecan pie for the road may seem tempting, but could ultimately slow you down. Try having a turkey sandwich or some green bean casserole instead.
5. It's All in the Details: If you have a very specific item in mind, print out a photo of it or have a screenshot ready on your phone. Retail employees will be much more likely to assist you if you have a reference photo to show them, rather than taking up their time with trying to describe that exact shade of blue.
The Execution:
1. The Treasure Map: If you are shopping at a mall you are not very familiar with, arrive early and take a picture of the mall floor plan. This will be more time efficient than wandering around in the midst of chaos, trying to navigate your way from JC Penney to Macy's.
2. Stay Hydrated: This one seems simple, but bring a bottle of water with you when you shop. Stores are often heated and even hotter due to crowding, so it's important to avoid dehydration and exhaustion.
3. To the Left, To the Left: Always listen to Beyonce. According to retail psychology, stores put the most expensive things towards the right of the store. It's also human instinct to go towards the right side anyway. By going to the left, you may find what you're looking for quicker and for less money.
4. Only You Can Prevent Awkwardness: While making a list is important, it's always possible that you are forgetting certain people. Find a sale on inexpensive gender-neutral gifts that you can give out in case someone gives you a gift that you forgot about. Examples: coffee mugs, adult coloring books and blankets.
5. Tote it All: Use canvas bags for all your purchases. Not only is it environmentally friendly, you won't have to keep count of how many bags you have from each store because they will all be in one place. Having a large bag over your shoulder will keep your hands free for more shopping and protect your hands from getting tired.
6. Safety Check: Only bring the necessities: phone, wallet, car keys. Do not trouble with a big purse full of things that won't be useful to you. If you do bring a purse, try for a cross body so you know where it is at all times and can keep an eye on it. While this is the time of giving, it is also a time of stealing so always be cautious.
The Aftermath
1. Drive Safely: After a long night of shopping (and turkey) you will be exhausted. Use extreme caution while driving home, because while your night is ending, someone else's may just be starting. Have your keys in your hand before you leave the store and lock your doors as soon as you get in the car. Also, never be afraid to ask a security guard to escort you to your car if you are feeling unsafe.
2. Sticky Notes: After a good night's sleep (or just power through if possible), label each gift with a sticky note while the recipient is fresh in your mind. This will be helpful when doing all the fun wrapping, card-writing and gift-hiding you have ahead of you.
3. You Earned It: Don't forget to enjoy a little something for yourself. You put in hard work for all of these perfectly-thought-out and personalized gifts, so appreciate your efforts!
Remember to be careful this holiday season, whether or not you participate in Black Friday. Hopefully these tips are helpful to all my fellow shoppers!
