The moon will be at a very historic size this coming November 14, 2016! A supermoon, which is a full or new moon at its closest approach to the earth on its orbit, will occur and it will be the closest full moon since 1948. There will not be another one like it till 2034!
The moon appears to grow and shrink in the sky because of its orbit around the earth, it’s like a natural occurring satellite visible most at night by the reflected light from the sun. The distance between the earth and the moon varies by about 30,000 miles and translates into the size differential on the earth’s surface.
The moon will be large, but it will be hard to tell the difference between this supermoon and others that occur every other 14th full moon. Halfway through the cycle, the moon will be new moons and they can also be super yet it is not a visible change on the earth’s surface. Still, it will be a fantastic site and all should be watching!
The best time to see the moon is when it begins to set, so the very early morning of November 14th before the sky starts to lighten. Remember–the moon will never look as close and as big as it does on November 14, 2016 for another 18 years!
