SUNY schools vs. private universities. Is there really a difference?

NY students! Why do SUNY schools get such a bad rep sometimes? Our degrees/ education are just as good, if not better.

SUNY schools vs. private universities. Is there really a difference?

Two months into my third year at SUNY Oneonta and I do not regret a minute of it. As I'm starting to look at graduate school, it brings me back to my senior year college application process. I had such a stigma because of my peers and adults that for some reason, going to a private institution as opposed to a state school was "better" or "more prestigious."

Keeping that in mind, I applied to 15 private universities and 3 SUNY schools. I did the SUNYs as a back-up because I was very indecisive. When it came to touring schools I noticed a pattern. Most of the private universities I visited were all run down, out of style, in awkward areas. Now, not all private universities are like this, many are taken care of and modernized. But many are not, and their tuition is ridiculous, even with scholarships. Education programs are poorly rated/ not accredited. If the campus is not being constantly renovated/modernized and/ or new programs are not being added then where is the money at these private universities going???

When I visited some of SUNY schools (Albany, Buffalo, Oneonta, New Paltz) the campuses were, for the most part, modernized, taken care of and somewhat worth the money you're paying. Yes, you're attending a state school but who cares? Education is the same, at the end of the day we have the same diploma. Most likely, the SUNY student will be in less debt ( not always). This is also the same for those who choose a community college. There is nothing wrong with that, especially if you are unsure of what to study.

There are exceptions for this, such as academic scholarships, sports scholarships and such. For myself, and others who are just average students who got good grades, but nothing special in school and did not play a sport in college, I had to take many factors into consideration when choosing. When I visited SUNY Oneonta, I loved it and was my second home from the start. I was expecting it to be rundown and old but it was the opposite.

This is not to say all private universities are like this because I know many people who go to them and love it! They are flourishing! Also, not all SUNY schools are perfect either. Some of them aren't as nice as the others physically, but education as a whole is equal to one of a private university. A degree is a degree!

So, any seniors applying to college-do not keep SUNY schools out of the running because of stigma and preconceived notions. Do what you feel is best for you!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
