Imagine, with me, a beautiful scene. The mountains stretch out before you, alone themselves a sight to behold. The sun is setting in the sky, painting the blue canvas with streaks of color. The pinks and oranges of the sky begin to show as the light fades away, and the warmth of the sun begins to die, leaving your skin feeling cool. It is vast, oh, so vast, the great sunset that appears before you, and the beauty of it all is nearly too much for your mind to handle.
I often find myself wondering how something as beautiful as the sunset can even exist. Perhaps that is one of the reasons why I believe in God. There's so much hurt in the world that sometimes it seems as if nothing good happens, but one look at the sunset can remind us that there is beauty to be found in this place. Maybe it won't be something we can grasp, but maybe it is something that fills our lives with its presence, bringing more joy than the tangible nature of the world.
The sunset is like love. It's like the feeling you get when you think of your mom or dad, or friend, or significant other. It makes your heart beat with gladness and the thought of it ever going away makes your heart ache. Sometimes, like when the sunset makes the clouds glow like gold, you wonder how you could be so fortunate to see this beautiful painting of life, for surely something so breathtaking cannot be real.
Watching the sun set in the night is like closing a book. The feeling you get when the book is finished makes you either happy or sad, depending on how the book ended, much like the sunset makes us happy or sad to end a day. It makes you think of everything that has just happened, and oftentimes I find myself yearning to do it all again—feel those emotions, see those things, be with those people.
It marks the end of a day, but reminds us that tomorrow the sun will rise again. The pain, sorrows, miseries of today will soon be forgotten, but the happiness, joy, and peace will remain ingrained in our memories, and all will be ready to be felt again. Like life itself, it is so hard to wrap our minds around, but unlike life, it is always pure and beautiful.
I've tried countless times to capture its beauty, but quite frankly, it is impossible to capture the beauty of something so magnificent on a man-made creation like a camera or cell phone. You can capture how it looks, but the picture will never make you feel like the moment itself when you experience the sunset with your own eyes. Nothing can capture the way that your heart feels or how you gasp when you first see it.
The sunset is like the purest kind of love: infallible, everlasting, and simply breathtaking.
